Fun Thread: What are your top 5 unicorn/rare 3rd gens?

Call me an old curmudgeon but if the designation of the S&W pistol has more than three numbers in it, I'm not the least bit interested in it!

The only "high numbered" S&Ws I have are a 629 and 659. The rest of them have two digits, i.e. 10, 66, 27, 39, 60, 64, 52, etc.

Real "Old Curmudgeon's" guns don't have any numbers just names!

:D

Well, at least you've got a 2nd Gen Model 659... :) ... which, as a mainly 3rd Gen collector, I consider a very cool gun except for the silly large Philips head screw holding on the right safety lever. :p I hope you have replaced that ugly thing. ;)

A favorite LGS just got in a used Model 639 which I would love to go see and buy if it is in really, really good shape. :) Unfortunately, the relatively low asking price probably suggests otherwise but I could be wrong. :o It might just be priced low for a quick sale.

Unless I missed it I didn't see a Model 4026 listed among the "unicorns" or rare 3rd generation semi-autos . . . even among those at the smithnut unicorn ranch . . . so am including a picture of one to make the list complete.

Of course the frame-mounted de-cocking lever is among its distinguishing features.

I love the 3rd Gen models with frame-mounted decockers.

I would love to own what I do not currently have which are a 5906- damn I hate the adjustable sights in this one, a 6904, a 4566tsw, and a 4516-1.

I would, love to find another of my first carry gun, a 4006 MA trooper gun again. That and performance center guns, frame mounted de cocker models, and a FBI 1076. Another I let get away years ago.

Love this thread! This is my first year of looking for S&W Semi-autos. Now own a:
3906, 4006, 5906, 5946 and a 39-2. My wish list keeps changing as I read such posts. But certainly a 45 and a 10mm if a good gun/good price come along. Thanks for sharing this info/pics.

dawggunner, if you did not already happen to know...

All of the pistols you've listed are great ones but the 3906 is the hardest to find of those. Make sure you hold on to that one. I would love to have one but I haven't gotten lucky quite yet.

My 2 90-95% 457's just because most I see have visible finish wear. Own a 3906 adjustable sights would say it's a solid 90%. Also my 909 since I don't see too many of them up for sale.

My current "most scarce" is my KSP 4566TSW, that was never issued. The 4566 was up to replace the KSP 1076 (own one of those too) and the political winds blew a Glock in to take it's place. This particular 4566TSW (no rail) was as a KSP designated firearm, but it never served. So I think both of those are somewhat rare.

I used to own a 3906 and a 4040PD, both somewhat difficult to find, but not as scarce I suppose. Love to find a 3914NL someday, when I still have "gun money" in my pocket. And I wish I had the 4040PD back in the safe.

Very enjoyable thread.

Of the top 5 I own, might have to start off with my four 1046's and the 1013 conversion, or my 5 FBI lettered 1076's. I think I have 28 S&W 10mm's
