They have a lot of overhead, so did Sears. That what happens from getting too big for your britches.

Last weekend the GM in Round Rock TX had the ammo marked 10% off the stickers on the boxes that were full MSRP.Today the sign reads 15% off ammo.A box/50 American Eagle 44 Remington Magnum has a sticker $59.99

All the powder(WST) and primers(Federal) are 40% off

There were 2 customers in the store today at 10AM and one was me.

I bought 5K more Federal LP primers at $23/1000,no SP primer left in stock.

All the Plano ammo boxes were gone.

Gun display cases were almost empty.Picked a few prop rods out of the garbage.

I just bought 500 rds of Winchester Ranger 130 gr .38+p hp's for $20/50 on the porch. Gander wants double plus tax. The store is also in Lake Mary, 100 mi. r/t. Their business model is 25 years old. We know what happens to "obsolete" items. Joe

I suppose now, it's the inventory liquidating company that sets the prices.

I had to make a run to Little Rock to the state crime lab this week. On my way back the Gander Mountain had a big "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE" banner out front that caught my eye so I stopped in. All of the clothing and shoes were 30% off but the hunting gear, gun gear, and ammo was only 10% off.

The 30% discount enticed me to purchase some 5.11 pants and shirts and a camo pull over. As many times as I've stopped there in the past when I'm in the area I don't think I've ever purchased anything because the prices were just too high.

Ours is going out of business. A friend of mine was looking for a Glock magazine. Academy was $30, and GM was $40. Then GM raised their price to $50 just before the GOOB sale. Now with their "30% off", it's $35. My buddy bought one from Academy.

Encouraging gun news, for those who live near a Gander that will reopen under new ownership:

I was at the St. Augustine, FL store last weekend. They had a 10-20% off liquidation sale. Picked up a couple of pounds of powder, wife a couple of shirts. No sale on firearms or ammo. Employees told me they were expecting a 5-6 month glide slope to closing. No news about a possible takeover.

So very typical of "GOOB" sales.

Been there, done that, walked out and bought elsewhere.

Gander screwed up when they sold their mail order business to Cabelas some years back. The "mail order" quickly turned to "internet" sales and that was the beginning of the end.

I was in Lafayette, IN this past Friday and made a walk through of the GM store there to see if anything was really on close out. The answer is no.

I was surprised to see that this store had a very impressive firearms inventory. Probably more than any of the other 3 or 4 GM's that I have ever visited.

BTW, I was in Lafayette for my daughter's graduation from her Phd program from Purdue University! There is a "new" doctor in the house!

It will be interesting to see how the new Gander does. I've seen a few of Marcus's TV shows and he strikes me as an interesting fellow who I'd enjoy having a conversation with. It'll be fun to see how he rebuilds the brand. I hope it's something other than just a full MSRP display of limited product like my local Ganders evolved into over the years.

The Gander store here in the Chattanooga area is closing. Recently built a Cabela's and Bass Pro down the road. With two Academy stores, Sportsman's Werehouse and a Dick's, this area seems oversaturated with these type of retailers all within minutes drive of each other.

The GM in west Tulsa is reportedly one that is scheduled to close. They seem to have a friendly, somewhat helpful staff but their GOOB sale prices are ridiculous IMO. At least for the stuff I look at.
