getting tired of...

One's spelling or misspelling doesn't bother me as much a the over use of abbreviations.
I agree with this but what really gets to me is these short novels people write and not one paragraph.

Sentences that run on line after line with no comas or periods.

What's with colored letters? Can only read it if I highlight the post.

A few thoughts:

#1 As a now 12 year retired construction worker I was more concerned with accurate measurements than minor spelling errors. That put real good money in my pocket.

#2 My spell-check I use is thought Microsoft (Vista) and in plain English it leavers a lot to be desired!

#3 I never thought I would have to prepare something I write for friendly down to earth people like I would for a Thesis.:(

#4 I think I will keep to myself rather than sharing!:D

One more thing: Level of education has nothing to do with it. My little hick school in flyover country had an absolutely amazing English teacher. My best friend, a maintenance guy in a meat packing plant, can hold his own in just about any grammar discussion, and he hasn't had a day of college. Furthermore, grammar was not a subject in any Master's program of which I've been a part.

I agree with you...to a point.

I'm guessing most misspellings are a result of two things...typos combined with not being a touch typist, looking at the keys rather than the screen as we type and clicking "Submit" before proofing to catch those typos. I know I'm really REALLY bad about that. Depending on my mood I may or may not edit to correct those if I'm having a bad day and there are a LOT of them, but most times, IF what I wrote is easily understndable despite the mistakes, I let them go.

PS...Incidentally, a nit-picker would note your misuse of the ellipse. You misuse it exactly as I do. Used correctly, the word immediately following an ellipse is capitalized and a space follows the last dot in the ellipse... Like this. I like your way better...and actually do it that way myself. :D

Well aint that a hoot. Another grammar nazi on an internet forum. Oh the stress caused me by peoples missed spelled words on an internet forum. What ever shale I do? I dont know if my life can go on knowing that there are so many misinformed misfits on the internet who cant or dont take the time to spell and punctuate properly. There must be more to life than correcting other peoples mis spelled words on an internet forum. I'm calling Al Gore he will take the internet down because it does nothing good it only promotes bad english and mis spelled words.

Typing on an ipad isn't the easiest or most efficient thing on the world. But it allows me to sit anywhere in or outside of the house and enjoy reading and sharing ideas.

I used to be like the OP...worried about every grammatical error I saw. But then i realized it just isn't worth it. If I can understand what the poster is saying, I simply don't care.

Now, in a work environment, totally different story. Must be professional. We have several millennials in communications roles, and it appalls me just how (ironically) pee-poor one of them can be when using the a English language. It drives me bonkers.

Yeah, you missed a couple of caps in your message about poor grammar. Oops.

Computer (and smart phone) use promotes bad writing habits. I have a problem with fat fingers on the keyboard making typos. But you can't worry too much about it.

whats mor importent. the meaning or the grammr?
Are you not a collage perfesser?? My experience in writing breefs is to try to rite at no more than a third grade leval so the judges can understand it. using latin terms like rectumus flatulance instead of just saying fart tends to make them mad (or is it angry).
PLus these days you can graduate with a advanced degree in engeneering and NOT know how to use a slide ruler-whatsupwiththat!!!!!

I have sometimes marveled at the creative spelling on this forum, but civility has kept me from remarking upon it. Just my $.02.

You have a valid point. I am just curious, is there a chance your a retired English teacher. Or have you ever been diagnosed with O.C.D

Yes, I do believe we have another case of OCD!?
..either that, or someone forgot to take off their "rose-colored glasses?

I know I don't have that mental condition... because, I don't sweat the small stuff!:D

I have always marveled at the level of knowledge about many subjects on this site....I'm 75, spent years as a Marine, and a cop of one jurisdiction or another. I managed to survive one shoot out, and a plane crash over the years.....As to education level I found the best spellers to be 60+ year old police Sergeant's who never graduated high school much less collage. They were always able to find a miss-spelled word in a two page police report written by hand, by much younger and better educated subordinates. Always amazed me how they knew..About the old times, have you ever read old time laws written by our forefathers, spelling not so good by our standards, however their penmanship is 500 time better than my granddaughter who is a straight A student....Funny about priorities isn't it??

This forum is about an exchange of ideas. It is not a submission of writing homework to be graded and returned with comments.

I agree with this. I also agree that we should use the tools at our disposal (spellcheck), and that we should continually make every attempt to better ourselves.

I understand i am of a different generation than a lot of the members here...and I also understand not everyone here has the opportunity for the level of education that I completed, but, we live in the age of the computer.
The era I was raised in, there was a lot of emphasis put on using the English language and CORRECT SPELLING. Now every computer I know of currently offers spell-check. Most all public access forums OFFER spell check in their "post new thread box" automatically...that's AUTOMATICALLY...the computer finds words that are misspelled as you TYPE them, it highlites the word, and even, in a lot of cases offers CORRECT spelling.
I humbly suggest that when you prepare a comment, you pay attention to this electronic marvel.
When I read comments here, and on other forums that I visit, my eyes slam shut at words, many common words, that are not spelled correctly.
Not to mention the run on paragraphs, mashed language used, and so on. As I write this, I can think of a number of active participants throughout this forum whose comments I will not read because it is an assault on my brain to try and figure out what said contributor is saying.
Maybe it's just me, perhaps I woke up today with a bug in my backside, but C'mon guys...I know from reading that most of you are well educated, familiar with the language in some real sense, somewhat computer savvy, but your writing would make one believe you did not make it past the fourth grade.

My PHONE doesn't always find the spelling errors.

Hows bout them there's cow folk speak? Drives me nuts however, It's also just easier to write the way you speak.

While I agree that wading through mis-spelled posts can be annoying, you obviously have an option. If you choose not to read these posts, you risk missing the wisdom, humor and intelligence these posts contain, however poorly expressed. Your choice...

"a slide ruler"

Hey Caj,

I have one of those!

When I got it 52 years ago, I was a wannabe engineer. But I wound up with a degree in bean-counting.

And, yes, I still know how to use it. However, in today's world of computer spell-checkers and calculations to the ump-teenth decimal, it doesn't give the "right" answers.

Progress is great!

My comments &/or suggestions:

1) Try changing to your 'jammies before accessing the 'net as overly tight knickers prolly are causing your problem.

2) You prolly are confusing "lack of Give-A HOOT for lack of eddie-kashun"

3) In the future, please try to use line spacing between paragraphs, it makes it easier for a geezer's eyes to follow :)
