Got DENIED purchase of a gun today, anyone else had this happen and appeal?

I put my social security number on the form and I got delayed twice. Applied for my permit on Thursday afternoon and picked it up Monday afternoon. Now in Montana all I have to do is fill out the form and sign.

My BIL has a gun shop close to the Canadian border. He had a Border Patrolman get delayed. Guy was seriously unhappy.

I would just try again and see what happens.

Yep, I got denied AFTER I got the gun, about 15 years or so ago. A large local Sporting goods store was going out of business back then and was continuously marking their merchandise down, nearly daily. As a result I ended up buying something like 3 guns in 3 days, or something like that. I don't recall exactly now what they even all were. But I filled out all of the forms, and back then they called them in right away and you got to leave with your purchase. Now days with a CDW permit (Ky calls it a Concealed Deadly Weapon permit) you show your permit and they don't even call it in.

Anyways, I'm driving to a job about 2 hours away when I get a phone call from the Ky State Police. The lady tells me that I needed to take the handgun I just bought that morning back to the store where I bought it! I asked her why and she just said "You're not allowed to have that gun". I said, "Ma'am, pardon me, but can you tell me what you are talking about? I've bought 2 or 3 guns in the last few days and there is no reason on earth why I can't own any of them". She said "If you don't take that gun back right now I'm putting out a warrant for your arrest and sending a State Trooper to your house!" I was starting to get mad and said "They'd be wasting a trip because I'm not home, and won't be for a long time."

Short version from there is, she convinced me to turn around and drive 2 hours back to the store and give them the gun back. They could not tell me why I had to return it, she wouldn't tell me, and several calls to the KSP yielded no answers at all. Then about 2 days later I get a call from the store saying "Sir, you can come pick up your pistol now." Nobody ever told me what the flip was going on, or why they went so far out of their way to make sure I didn't have that gun. I'll probably never know.

So what that long story is about, is they make mistakes. Someone keys in a wrong number or letter and they confuse you with someone else. I bet they will have it straightened out in short order. I've told that story to a few buddies and some of my closest FFL guys, and every one said the same thing to me. They just screw things up sometimes. But they can't tell you who they thought you were, just that a mistake was made.

KSP never told me what went wrong, but they dang sure made me nervous for a couple of days. I kept waiting for them to knock on my door with a search warrant. And I've not been arrested since I was a teenager in the 70's, for possession of stems and seeds of an illegal herb. :o I paid that fine and mended my ways. :D

Best of Luck, let us know how it turns out.

Key stroke? Phone or fax from paper form completed by hand. I have never used an online 4473.

Someone has to take what I write down and enter it into a computer, THAT'S where I worry about boo boo's. But as KY law stands, those of us with carry permits don't have to wait for them to "call it in". The gun store guys always say "Good!" when I show it to them, they don't like calling in either. Less work for them and they know the sale will go through. ;)

True even for Wally World. They are glad to not have to be on hold for an extended periods of time.
