Gun Grievances: Things You Just Don't Like

Thumb hole stocks on rifles.

Smooth Grips on DA revolvers. Love them on SA revolvers.

Rails should be a option on all automatics.

What I detest is high end 1911s that will not run when new.
I have two Colts and two Remington Rands that were made beau coup long time ago. Ran right out of the box.
Not so much now. Expensive does not mean quality, this day and time.

Rule 303

Range Commandos- Just because you didn't have the sack to join the military doesn't mean it's OK to go the range in full camo with your AR15 and "play Army". I'm tired of seeing 400 lb. slobs in BDU's doing "tactical training" at my range. I will make fun of you, you know who you are:rolleyes:

People who talk about wheelguns like my S&W 581 like it's a 200 year old antique when I'm at the range........"OMG is that a revolver" coming out of the mouth of some 21 year old dillweed with an XD and a Mosin rifle he just bought at Gander Mt. just annoys me.

People who think that the .38 Special revolvers I use for CC are "not enough gun". I'm tired of the "if you carry a wheelgun it better say .44 Magnum on the barrel" crowd.

On a related note, people who think revolvers are a "poor choice" for CC.

Captain Red Dot......the guy we all know who MUST put a red dot on every gun they own.

What I really hate is all of the ones I want I can't afford. but I get some of them anyway.

1) Ugly guns. Doesn't have to look ugly to be functional.
2) Plastic/polymer guns. See above.
3) Striker fired guns.
4) Guns with IL's.
5) MIM parts. Cost cutting measure - nothing more.
6) Kimbers - all of them. Yes, you have one thats never faltered. Good for you! :)
7) Warnings laser etched on guns.
8) Laser etching. Cheesy looking cost cutting measure. You want $600 + for that handgun? Rollmark it then.
9) Two piece barrels. Yes, Dan Wesson did them right. No company since has.
10) Unobtanium J-frame magnums. You gonna practice much with that? Really?
11) The Judge/Governor......please.
12) Camoflaged/color finishes on guns.
13) Gold plated/colored parts on guns.
14) Lawyer triggers. 5.5lbs DA or get your lawyer to buy it.
15) "Break in periods". Invented by Kimber to excuse their lousy QA/QC. If it won't run out of the box it's of no use to me.
16) "DA/SA transition issue". Twenty years shooting TDA pistols before I knew this was a "problem". Some folks should practice more......or buy a plastic striker fired gun. ;)

An older blued S&W with Pachmayr or Hogue grips.......if I see one more pre-WWII M&P or Registered Magnum with Pachmayrs on it I'm gonna puke......

Gotta disagree on the anti-glock stance some of you have. I love mine, and I made fun of the stupid things until my wife picked one out for carry. Liked hers so well, I've got several. They always go bang.

Stan, you are the man. I agree with your whole post.

But I'll add that if they aren't making fun of my revolvers, it is my liking for the 9mm that takes a beating.

Oh well, gotta love them tacticool commandoes!

Oh yeah Highlander, you reminded me of one of my biggest "dislikes"......

People who tell me 9mm is "not enough for defense". These guys usually are the same ones who are the "a .38 revolver is a poor choice and is obsolete"

Things I don't like? Oooh, where to begin! :D

Anything painted black (or camouflage).

Anything considered "tactical"

Anything with an "accessory rail" (usually two or three... :P )

Anything having to do with the M16/AR15.

Lasers. The shooters crutch.

Plastic. Anywhere (I don't even like aluminum...)

The lock, obviously. And MIM parts.

Round butts on any gun bigger than a J frame. I find them especially egregious on an N frame!

The khaki "tactical vests" that hang just below the belt. Wearing one is not only "tacticool", it also is like wearing a huge flashing neon sign that says "I'm carrying a concealed handgun!" :D

The almost complete militarization of virtually everything.

The almost total lack of "class" left in the shooting/hunting culture. The only place it seems that there is any left is in the bird hunting world. Watch a shooting or hunting show. Hard rock music, always pushing the latest and greatest, and all of them out there "for the RUSH, man!!!".

Dealers/individuals that don't clean their guns before trying to sell them.

"Dealers" at gunshows that put guns out on the table and apparently don't want to sell them, putting ridiculously high prices on them.

I could go on.... :D :D :D

S&W revolvers that require a trigger job.
S&W revolvers that have an internal lock and MIM.
People who don't scrub off the crud around the charge holes on the cylinder face.
Most rubber grips.
Rifles that come w/o iron sights.
Optics that cost more than the rifle they are mounted on.
Cleaning up after slobs on the range.
Standing in line to get into the gun show.

On the other hand, I carried a duty Glock for 12 years. Best cop gun ever. Reliable, accurate and as close to idiot proof as one could hope for. I own a 22 w/Tritium sights. I love my S&W revolvers, but the Glock is a fine handgun.

People who complain about prices, consider anything made recently inferior to anything made 30-50 years ago, and never buy anything but the elusive "new-in-the-box" estate sale stuff. Your voice in the gun industry is your buying power. If you don't like polymer, anything tactical, lasers, ARs, or 9mm's, then why is every gun store loaded to the gills with them? I like revolvers, but if you go anywhere around here all you see are overpriced 1911's and Glocks, XDs, and M&Ps.

I'll complain. I don't like the disparity of prices between calibers. The more powerful the caliber the higher the prices. I know there is more engineering and more metal but the prices are out of line.

WRT shooting, the thing that really gets to me is the attitude of many British shooters - the ultimate in apathy and self interest. What I saw in between the Dunblane shootings and the passing of the Firearms Act 1997 that banned pretty much everything on this site filled me with UTTER CONTEMPT for them - more so than my opinion of the anti-gunners. It also put me off shooting until I'd emigrated.

I try not to think about it: there are other countries (200 of them) and I have other interests.

Plastic, especially on shotgun stocks. Tactical shotguns (do I really need a door breacher?). Give me classic wood and blue on a shotgun; I'll take blued or nickel on my handguns please.

OP: Good post and presentation, thank you. +1

-Most gun magazines. When I first got into the hobby, I read an article by a "well known personality/authority" on firearms and defense. The assessment of a firearm was in contradiction to the facts; the author did make some mention of "minor issues", and then went on to praise it. The "reasonable person" would note that the issues mentioned did not warrant their appraisal. After a few more magazine purchases, it became clear that in terms of new product, at least, the readers are often left in want of an objective view...it seems every new item is "great".

LGS here that exercise poor salesmanship and lack of product knowledge.

Any laser/disco ball accessory.
