There is a 30-minute Gunsmoke rerun from 1960 airing today - "The Badge".

This one is unique, in my opinion, because of the extra effort one of the character actors, John Dehner, puts into dying after Matt Dillon shoots him. Most realistic (or what I picture as realistic) violent death scene I can recall. Worth watching if you haven't seen it.

Guns of the Old West, Summer 2020, Has a good feature on that series.

John Dehner was a top character
actor who could play the nastiest
villain or the biggest jerk in
the neighborhood.

His distinctive voice was well
a marvel to listen to. Loved him
as the narrator for "Hallelujah Trail."

John Dehner was one of the great character actors of television as well as the voice on many radio shows. I watched an old Gunsmoke episode last night wherein he played Kitty Russell's long lost father. He disapproved of her ownership of the Long Branch, insisted she sell it and return to Nawlins with him. She realized he was a grifter out to steal her money and with Matt's help sent him on his way.

Had to look him up.
Didn’t recall exactly who he was.
He was in a bunch of stuff for a long time!
Been watching A Word on Westerns on YouTube.
Rob Word works at the Autry and interviews lots of movie folks, some well known, some character actors, stunt folks, horse wranglers, etc.

I prefer the old thirty minute B&W episodes. I think “The Round Up” is the episode that I find the most touching. (Reminiscent of the incident in which J. B. Hickok accidentally shot Mike Williams.)

All my my life, I have watched parts of Gun Smoke when it was the best thing on, but never paid close enough attention to the plot outside of the action to know many episodes. On another post, someone said that the Matt Dillon character killed (or shot?) over 500 bad guys. Not hard to believe considering how long the show ran.

I believe he was the voice of Paladin on the radio.

Don't remember him but the main characters,Matt, Doc, KItty, & Festus were all good. Never did care much for Chester and didn't like him in the one where he played a Sheriff deputy from Arizona in NYC. Dennis Weaver just is not one of my favorite ac\ctors.
