Had A pretty scary thing happen yesterday.

20 years ago my wife parked her jeep in the garage and dropped it into park while it was still moving. The next morning as I rolled the wheelie bin down the driveway to the curb I heard snow crunching behind me,turned around enough to shove myself away from her rolling car and watched it head out into the cul de sac.It would have flattened me if it was summer
I need to start using my parking brake again

In a 2019 Toyota Rav4 I don't think there's an option to not use the parking brake. I know every time you put it in Park the brake automatically comes on. You can pull on the button and the brake will come on if you have it in gear too.

My '99 Dodge w/ auto had the linkage arm wear into the valve body shaft. Mine jumped out of park into reverse, but it was facing downhill and found a Ford p-u to destroy his box. Glad you live to tell your story.

As a wet behind the ears, know nothing baby Trooper I was taught to stomp on the emergency brake as you throw it in park and reach for the door handle. You never know when you might have to bail out after a runner and not quite get the patrol car into park (it has happened). Only had one runner but I did have a couple instances where the patrol car didn't get into park after a pursuit. It is a habit I still do today, the left foot just automatically steps down on the E Brake.

Glad you had enough presence of mind to roll away and only wound up with a hand injury and some bumps and bruises.
Same here. Had a few times when I returned to my patrol car and the car was still in Drive with the parking brake on. Lesson learned.

My 2002 F-150 tranny had some problems at about 180,000 miles. Took it to a good independent transmission shop and had it rebuilt. Works like new, no slippage or any other problems.

My wife has a new Hyundai Santa Fe. It has a "Hold" feature. When it is on and you stop the car it will hold in place until you step on the gas again. I do not trust it and keep my foot on the brakes.

A Little Long
Went down to the irrigation office yesterday.. Put the truck in park and went to the door. When I came back...opened the door grabbed the handhold on the door post got one foot on the trucks running board and before I could step up the truck which was running dropped out of park into reverse. Knocked me over...drug me down the road about 50-75 ft before I could get the door open enough to let go and roll away from the truck without getting legs or arms run over...still ran over my right hand...Don't know why it dropped into reverse. Truck ended up backing into a large electric pole. 100 feet or so away. ..the hitch hit dead center. The only damage other than to me was the pole got a gouge in it. BTW the truck is a 2007 Ford F-250 in exc condition. Many moons ago I had a close friend get out of her car at her roadside mailbox. The car went into reverse ran over and killed her...never thought something like that could happen to me...I must admit I am a sore puppy today. Just a word to the wise...try not to do stupid stuff...my wife's words to me!!
Very scary situation, glad you are okay.

Man glad it ended relatively well, all things considered. I hate when things like this happen but also appreciate the reminder.of how fragile life is.

I can't figure the parking brake on the Subaru......It's a little electronic lever in the shift console Put it on and sometimes you have to turn it off 3 or 4 ties to get it to release...maybe i'm doing it wrong. I am lucky the truck didn't run over me...that thing is heavy. ..I am glad I can shoot left handed...right hand is reaally sore...I'm wondering if I should report this happening...tellong Ford may get it lost. I will have Ford check the shift cable??. At least I'm still here! Thanks gor all the replies. Careful out there

Grew up and spent most of my life in Flatlandia.
Never developed the habit of using the parking brake.
I know that’s going to have consequences one day.

One day you will put it on and won't be able to get it off. Those cables rust and get stuck.
Those are the cables that aren't used regularly.
The ones that are used as directed* do not have time to build rust on moving parts.

*RTFM!

A week ago I intentionally broke a 4 foot fluorescent tube in the waste basket. The resultant flying glass bit me on the right arm, leaving a fairly deep 3" gash. My wife saw me do it and, thankfully, didn't say a word as she put butterfly bandages on my arm. In retrospect, I realize that, without exception, every injury or accident I've ever experienced has been the result of doing something stupid. And it's only taken me 81 years to learn that.
