Having S&W Install a New Barrel?

I'm considering having S&W install a new barrel on a revolver, and I'd love to hear from anyone who has had this experience with S&W, and whether they were happy with the job done.

Specifically, I inherited a 629-1 with a 6 inch barrel. I want a 4 inch barrel on it. The forcing cone on the 6 inch barrel has a very slight bit of damage, so I want to install a new barrel instead of having this one cut down (the only damage is to the forcing cone, there is no damage to the frame). Also, there is sentimental value in this revolver for me, so I don't want to sell it and buy another with a 4 inch barrel.

I had my 686-1 6in rebarreled to a 4in by S&W last feb.I love it!I had LSG IN Comanchee TX. DO IT. He had the barrel in stock which was GREAT! They are a S&W repair center. It took 10 day turnaround!!!He did the install supplied the barrel and fixed my crane, Which was bent I didn't know that! It was tight to open sometimes so I find out it was bent.Now she shoots and opens so easy.Oh the best thing was cost.Everything cost $283 shipping included!So check out LSG.He did a EXCELLENT rebarrel job for me!

Right now I wouldn't pay for s&w to re-barrel! The rason I say that is I have a 3 month old 625PC that had to go back once to fix quite a few cosmetic problems about the barrel. I had a perfectly aligned barrel to frame when I sent it. They replaced the barrel, locking pin, among other things. When I got it back, the barrel was canted to the point where the locking was entering and securing the extractor rod. It is very obvious and difficult to sight with the front sight at an angle. Being a relative newbie to revolvers, I'm not sure what the consequences could be shooting a revolver where the extractor isn't being locked? But the big question for me is, especially if you are a gunsmith, wouldn't you check the fit and alignment of the parts you just replaced!!

I talked with s&w last week......they acted like it's not a big deal.Asked if I really wanted to send it back! I said I wanted it fixed and would like a visually and mechanically perfect PC gun, as I paid PC price for it. He said he would email a shipping tag. One week later, I'm still waiting. I think an email to Kate Fredette is in order. I know everyone says that s&w will make it right, but this isn't right......3 month old gun, going back for the second time, to have it's 3rd barrel put in and haven't even put 125 rounds through it. My $250 22A is of better quality than this Performance Center gun. I also bought a 617 while the 625 was back the first time, and the 617 is perfect in every way. But until this gets resolved, I don't think they will get any more of my $.

S&W rebarrel my 586 and refinish.

I recently sent in a 586 with the barrel hacksawed down to 3 inches which was suppose to be a professional cut. I ended up ordering a 4 inch barrel from Numrich and sending it in to Smith.
I requested the deluxe finish with the revolver "pintoed". They replaced the barrel in the frame. Nickled the barrel,cylinder and the release latch. They replaced the side plate at no charge as it had a security companies property stamp on it. The revolver now has the large logo on the right side and they installed a new firing pin bushing even through the revolver had been stamped with an "M" and the modification had already been done. For all the work it cost $300 plus shipping for the work.

Thanks for your responses everyone. I shipped the 629 to S&W and eagerly await to hear back from them. I'm going to add a set of Spegel Cocobolo boot grips, and when she's all done, I'll come back and post some pictures.
