Headed for Texas in a few weeks

Any quirks I need to know about Texas CCW? I know my Ohio CCW is accepted. Going to San Antonio, Fredricksburg and Azle.

And I have spent a fair amount of time in Ft. Worth.

Pretty easy and straightforward here. Just pay attention to the prominently posted signs. What is called the 30.06 sign means no carry of no kind inside. 30.07 means permitted concealed carry is OK but no open carry is allowed. Both signs posted means no carry, either open or concealed. Law requires you to present both your driver's license and your carry permit if you have one, carrying or not. Most LEO's here will ask if you are carrying after presentation and where. Unless something has disturbed them, they will usually nod and ask that you leave it where it is. Most are not too outwardly concerned about it. Of course that depends on when and where and what time of day it is where you make this contact! Concealed means concealed, of course, but cops mostly are not concerned with a bit of printing, at least in West Texas. And of course, the large metropolitan areas aren't necessarily as gun friendly as in the rest of the State. Over all, Texas is a gun friendly state and officers and most others are not surprised by someone carrying. It's kind of expected! Just be polite and respectful and cooperative and you won't have any trouble!

Be nice to everyone, especially LEOs, and you'll be fine. Drive safely and you likely won't ever speak to LEOs.

Very gun friendly state. Especially in rural areas they basically expect 50% of adult males to have some sort of firearm in the car.
Even though open carry was legalized a while back, it's just not really socially acceptable here, unless you're hunting or on your own land. People expect you might have a gun...just like they expect you're wearing underpants. Keep both politely tucked away and you won't have a lick of trouble!

TX has pre-emption, so local ordinances can't trump state firearms law. In other words, the City of Austin can't put any more restrictions on pistol packers than state law does.

if the Blue Bonnets and Indian Paint Brushes are in their full glory, be prepared to have a permanent smile on your face. slow down and enjoy the scenery. the Hill Country in springtime is awe inspiring.

Fredericksburg has a VFW post with some of the nicest and friendliest folks I have met anywhere. A Motel 6 right across the street allows the traveler to fully enjoy the hospitality with no need to get behind the wheel afterward. Also a great little café in the old downtown area, superb breakfast served by very nice folks. If you have the time check out the Admiral Nimitz museum and displays.

Overall, Texas is a pleasant state with friendly folks everywhere you go.

Just in case you haven't heard, just a bit north of Fredericksburg, there's a much better than average barbeque place called Coopers. They charge you by the weight of the meat you choose directly off the smoker. Danger! Your eyes, goaded by that wonderful smell, will cause your hip pocket to be sore when you pay out. But, you can carry out what you don't eat and make another good meal from it!!!

While you're in San Antonio, be sure to stop in to one of the Bill Miller Barbecue locations (they're all over town, as well as scattered over most of South Texas) and order up a Poor Boy Plus. Trust me, you'll be hooked for life! It's one of the things I miss most about not living in Texas anymore.

It’s also full of crazy drivers, crazy enough to scare a Kiwi boy from driving in the city.

We hit Austin about 11 am on a Sunday morning. 25 miles out from the city centre on the freeway traffic was crawling, and it got worse the closer in we got.

At one point we were in the right lane of two wanting to turn right at a Y intersection. Drivers kept coming up in the left land and stopping at the junction with the Y. They were totally blocking traffic and forcing themselves into the right lane when the lights turned green. One place we wanted to get through was on a one way system, but you couldn’t get there cause all the roads were closed off.

The only place we found that was worse was Vegas on a Saturday afternoon with all the Los Angelosers in for the weekend.

Why in the world would you visit Azle?

An old friend of ours has a horse ranch near there. We plan visiting for a day or two then visiting family in McKinney before we fly out. We planed the timing of the trip because my wife is hoping to see the blue bonnets blooming.
