Hi,

I could use some help from those more knowledgeable than me. I have a S&W 32 cal L 6 shot revolver. The model number is 10D. 30-1. The serial num. is H52239. It has a 3 in barr. & fixed sights. Blued finish, very slightly pitted here and there. Finish a little worn on left front edge of barrel, prob from rubbing on holster. Overall, looks ok to me, but I'm not remotely educated about revolvers. I'd like to know the approximate year of manufacture and approx. value if I sold it or used it as a trade in for another handgun. Thanks

Howdy Wolfie, and welcome aboard from Wyoming.

Can't claim to be more knowledgeable than you, but maybe I've spent a few more bucks on .32s than you.

I'm betting the inside of the frame (after you roll the cylinder out) says, "MOD. 30-1" (not 10D. 30-1). Your revolver's original name was .32 Hand Ejector and was built on the I-frame. Around 1958 S&W added the model number (Model 30), and around 1961 the company began making the Model 30-1 on the J-frame.

Based on information in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, yours was likely produced around 1972. The experts should be along soon with a better guess on when the factory shipped yours.

Can't help with value without a few detailed photos, please.

Bob

Some corrections to two-bit cowboys comment. "Small Frame" S&W production for this model was changed to the "J" Frame in 1961. Basically it is the same as the "Improved I Frame" only lengthened slightly to allow it to accommodate the .38 Special cartridge. It simplified production by changing all small frame guns to the same frame size instead of two.

The model number is 30-1. Other marks you find in the yoke cut are the "assembly number", which is duplicated on the yoke, the bottom left side of the grip frame under the stocks, and inside the sideplate. Other marks, the 10D, are all fitters or inspectors stamps, nothing more.

H1 through H60000 were produced during 1971-72, so there is little doubt your gun was produced sometime in 1972.

Value is quite subjective, depending on who is the buyer. A dealer may give you $100 either purchase or trade in the condition it sounds like it is in. A private sale could produce as much as $250 but likely no higher unless you find a real guppy.

I have a slight disagreement with the pricing ALK8944 mentioned. Although OP didn't give the gun a glowing description, I envision it as slightly used, but not abused. These little 32's have been bringing more in the market than most believe, although that is by regional market. I have seen 30-1's and 31-1's (in very nice condition) bring upwards of $650 to $700. Used but decent condition guns are frequently bringing $450.

The small frame 32's have a good following, and with proper ammo are reasonable as self protection guns, but fabulous as plinking and fun trail guns. These two are both Pre 30's.
