He said "AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers".
Isn't the Kalashnikov the weapon of choice of Communist and Islamic nations?
Maybe he just got mixed up on where his loyalties lie.

They're making a big deal out of "purchasing a total of 6,000 rds of ammunition." A few years back, BassPro had WWB 9mm for $3.88 a box. I put 27 cases (13,500rds) on my Visa, loaded it on the back of my S-10 and drove off. Front wheels barely on the ground. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary and I would have bought more but they wouldn't write a raincheck for any more. Still have a couple thousand rounds left, even after selling 3K during the last "shortage" that about made the rest free. I guess I'm on "the list." Joe

Well there you go, he supports the Second Amendment. It would not hurt me one bit to have to wait a few days to clear a background check.
Gun laws are not a bad thing.

I just logged on to post the same link as the OP. I am surprised. I really thought they would sit on this until after the election. Just too good an opportunity for the anti-gun folks I guess.

Sadly, a lot of gun owners will buy into the whole "keep guns out of the hands of children, the mentally ill and criminals" and "leave the assault rifles to the police and military" propaganda.

I have talked to many hunters and target shooters who say they have no problem banning so-called assault rifles or high cap magazines, so long as no one wants to mess with their hunting and target guns.

Obama, Brady, Bloomberg, Lautenberg and others who want to to bring about more gun control fully understand the concept of divide and conquer. Start with AK 47's, internet ammo purchases and high cap magazines, more waiting periods and more extensive background checks, then....

You're missing the whole point: WHY SHOULD I have to wait if I am a law-abiding citizen?

A 1-day wait turns into a week. A week turns into a month......etc, etc, etc

So, the headline reads "new gun laws" and the transcript says...nothing about new laws.

And then there is that whole Congress thing that would have to actually write and PASS those laws.

And if you think he won't go all out against the 2'nd if he's re-elected, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell as well as some beachfront property in AZ that is ready to go cheap as well. Truth be told up until he became POTUS he did not meet a gun control law that he didn't like and vote for.

A while back-probably more than a year-in the American Rifleman, of all places, the main gun rights guy devoted most-if not all of his column-at the hysteria about "what the President was going to do" or something along those lines. He then proceed to give a brief civics tutorial outlining the legislative process, reminding everyone that the President was not the king, didn't have a magic wand, and then gave a brief outline of what would have to transpire in order to "take our guns away" beginning with altering the U. S. Constitution. Then he suggested that everyone cool their collective jets. I'll bet he got some feedback on that column-wow.

The shooter used a AR, not an AK. AKs are imported, he may, I'm not sure, be able to do something about imports through the state dept, he can't do anything about ARs without congress.

Sounds like pandering to me. There will be no gun legislation this year according to Reid. We know the house wont alow anything.

The only think Obama accomplished was to increase the sales of AKs.

Oh yeah, he hit his email server limit. lol.

The President isn't King, but the executive branch has massive authority within its duty to carry out the existing laws. The multi long gun form has just allowed ATF to track multiple long gun purchases, with no Congressional approval. There is a move to use funding to undercut that executive order but clearly the Executive has a lot of power.

The GCA is very vague in some areas and gives a lot of authority to ATF to determine what constitutes a straw purchase and many other things. Fast and Furious alone shows the ability of the executive branch to impact the overall debate without having the power to pass laws.

Presidents have the power of the bully pulpit and a lot of regulatory discretion. No Obama cannot pass gun control laws himself, but underestimating the power of the President to advance a legislative or other agenda is a mistake.

I never have bought the "they're coming for your guns" view with other candidates. I know they would like to regulate them more but Obama has shown throughout his political career a uniquely strong anti-gun stance. He answered on a poll as a state legislator supporting a ban on all semiautomatic weapons. Illinois is so anti-gun it's scary and he was for sure right in line with their view of no conceal carry for private citizens and the handgun ban in Chicago.

True he can't just ban guns, and I don't see that happening, but he's surely the most anti-gun President in my lifetime and IMO in history. Whether he has the political chips to do anything about it is a real question, but prior to being President his views were pretty clear and by our standards here are very extreme.

I sure hope so, trying to sell a couple right now. :D

Like others I'm surprised he commented but I think he felt he had to say something about Aurora and his anti-gun supporters I'm sure expected a lot more than he said. It even let the White House say he wasn't calling for more laws. Now how you can suggest "AKs" don't belong on the "streets" and that you don't want a new law I don't quite get, but obviously he has no intention of making this an election issue.

We all know the truth: they use "AKs" to describe guns b/c people who don't know guns think we're running around with the full auto guns of our enemies, real military rifles used by terrorists and rebels. The excellent data posted by others that very few people are killed by rifles and probably 300/yr generously by "assault rifles" doesn't matter. The call to ban the 6-10 round capacity street guns that do the majority of the killings isn't rousing enough emotionally and too many voters own one.

Exactly what the gov't did in England. Registered just the hand guns, and the long gun owners didn't care. "We don't want them, we just want to know where they are."
Then working from the list they took the hand guns, and the long gun owners didn't care.
Then they wanted to register the long guns. "We don't want them, we just want to know where they are." ...

Divide and conquer.

Far too many people believe everything FOX News puts out. From what I have seen, Obama is not after new gun laws. He said he wants to tighten up any loop holes in existing gun laws.
Here in Hawaii, there is a charge of $30.00 to start the permit process. The fee covers a photo, finger printing, and an FBI background check.
Twenty days later, if you pass muster, you receive a permit to purchase as many long guns that you want in a one year period. Go figure!!!
If you want a handgun, add a three day class in gun safety. The class is offered three times a year. If you get a permit to purchase, you have only ten days to buy the handgun. In most cases this means it has to be ordered from the mainland and shipped next day air to meet the deadline.
These are just hurdles that everyone here has to jump over. Where there ias a will, there is a way.
