High beams as a warning

Back in the bad old days of the 55 mph speed limit, it was quite commonly done in Texas to warn about speed traps. That way, drivers could slow down to around 70 mph to avoid getting a ticket.;) Also, back in the '70s, when a BMW was a cult car with few in the U.S., their drivers would usually flash at oncoming Bimmers.

My Dad did it and so taught it to me by practice. This was rural upstate NY 1960s and 1970s. I still do it but I think very few know why I do. Occasionally I get a thanks from passing car but not often.

Twenty years ago, I used to see it all the time but almost never anymore. Distracted drivers can't stop looking at their phones long enough to heed a warning or much else.

Personally, I would never flash my lights to warn potential violators that they were at imminent risk of paying the consequences for committing a violation. I have flashed my lights to warn approaching traffic of upcoming danger such as an accident or deer, livestock or debris on the roadway that presented a hazard.
