Higher front sight 57 nickel

My 57 nickel shoots way high (12" @30 yds) with my preferred LBT 250 grain bullets. Are higher front sights available or is this a return to Smith project?

I suppose I could drill the sight blade on the top and pound in a brass screw or something

What is the height for the rear sight blade? Any chance you have sight blade for a longer barreled gun in place?

The rear is 0.170 above the mount/traverse boss. It is a 6 inch gun and shoots point of aim with 210 gr. bullets. The heavy slugs are the problem as the rear is screwed down as far as it goes.

That sounds kind of high for a rear sight blade, unless you are talking about the lunette on the blade when you mention a "boss". .160 is the highest nominal sight blade height. The lowest blade, a .126 would, theoretically, lower point of impact 16" @ 30 yds. assuming you barrel is 6". The easiest way is just shoot the 210 gr. bullets the factory sights are calculated for.

Call S&W or Brownells for a .126 sight blade kit. Don't forget a staking tool and order at least a set of sight plunger/spring as you are very likely to lose these disassembling the sight. The kit from S&W has an instruction sheet with it.

Alk8944, One other question, What is a lunette? My reference to a boss is to the serated cylinder that contains the traverse screw and spring and mounts the rear sight leaf.

The lunette is the small tubular portion of the blade that the screw goes through. You cannot see it unless the sight is disassembled.

To measure the height of your current blade run the windage all the way to the left. The blade widd protrude from the left side of the base so it can be measured directly with a dial caliper or micrometer. The blade should measure .126", .146" or .160". All these are nominal and the actual height can be as much as .005 either way from these figures. If you measured yours from the top of the blade to the center of the semi-circular cut in the center of the base you will get a similar measurement. As I said, if your blade is a .160 you need to replace it with a .126.

Thanks for your patience. My rear sight will need the change out as my measurement is as you described to the bottom of the semicircular cut out in the base. I compare it to a 6" 27 that I have and the 57 sight is noticeably taller.
