HIGHWAY PATROLMAN, Model 28-2, mfg. ‘69 - ‘71.

Just bought this from a S&W collector in New England. Called S&W this morning and they said it was manufactured between 1969 and 1971.

When I was a state trooper we carried heavy barrel model 10’s which were quite a bit lighter. (25 oz. vs. 30 oz.)





This thing just reeks of quality. I think it has a little glossier finish than some of the 28-2’s I have seen before.

Nice wheel gun, I've got one myself. They really shoot well. Though mine is closer 40 ounces, similar in weight to my 686, but the 28 just feels "bigger"

I just weighed mine on a postal scale. (42.5 oz.) Don’t know where the 30 oz information came from.

Just checked Wikipedia again and found the correct weights.

I read somewhere that when the troopers first started using these revolvers, they felt that if the shots fired did not bring down the bad guy, they could always throw the gun at them .

That inset is probably an after market fit.

I like the Model 28-2 also, except for the weight. So, with some modifications,

38 ounces, loaded.

When I was in that academy my roommate from another agency had an issued M28 that was a beater. I traded him a model 28 (LNIB) that I owned for a model 19 - which I no longer have.

Congrats on the new to you HP! That is a beauty! When I started as an LEO in Colorado, I went to work with a 19-4 that I bought at a pawn shop on the Western Slope. I would have transitioned to a M-28, but the Sheriff transitioned us into Semi-Autos my first 6 month on the job and I chose the S&W 645. Wish I still had that gun. I still have the M-19...and 4 and 6 inch M-28 s

The 28 wears it's weight well. Meaning that the balance of the gun prevents it from feeling too heavy in the hand. As for recoil, what recoil?

Yeah, you could definately knock some one into next tuesday with the butt of a 28.

Michigan State Police. Trooper from 1966 to 1974, Detective Sergeant 1974 to 1987, Detective Lieutenant 1987 to retirement 1989.

My daughter came in in 1987 and retired as a First Lieutenant in 2918. On the 100th anniversary in 2017 my daughter and I served a total of 53 years.

Aren't they great revolvers? I picked one up a few years back...no box or anything, but it looks unfired. It came from an estate sale where I got several other N Frames that were unfired still in the box. Mine is a '69 shipping date. No real turn line to speak of.

I talked my daughter out of her model 67-1 after she retired. The department gave these to Troopers who shot distinguished expert. I never shot that good.

Great revolver and I was thinking when someone added the Red Ramp they had it reblued in a glossy finish.

My Model 28 is one of my favorite handguns. Found it used alone on a table of Colts at a gun show. Did not know much about S&W revolvers back then, but it has been a great revolver. Used it to qualify for concealed carry range qualification numerous times.

Thanks for your years of service, and congratulations on picking up a very nice HP. Lots of HP and Model 28 fans here on the Forum, so you're in good company. I have a few myself, from a first year (and birth year) 1954 HP to a few Model 28-2s from 1974-77. Great and dependable revolvers that are built like tanks. N-frames take a little getting used to with their size and weight, but it's my favorite frame size (I have Model 25, 27s, 28s, 29s, and 57). Also a military Model 1917 and a W&K .44 HE 3rd Model (1926). Your Model 28-2 is in great condition, and should be a fun shooter. Enjoy!

I have two Highway Patrolman that are first year production, but this 28-2 (1967) sees a lot of range time. It has great patina.
