History Rewritten

Some of the same things are happening in New Mexico. Some Pueblo Indians*, especially this generation, have been protesting some Spanish Conquistadors statues and events.

There've been statue unveilings that have been protested and vandalized - Juan De Onate, even a decades old event was canceled in Santa Fe - The Reconquista. They're also trying to get the University of New Mexico seal changed because they find it offensive.

Until now, nobody cared. I guess they must have lots of time to be upset.

The irony is that the Pueblo Indians who are protesting, have Spanish surnames and it's likely their pueblo has a centuries old Spanish name denoting their Spanish heritage. Never mind the fact that all over the state, there are schools, streets, towns ect., named after Conquistadors and places in Spain. Even our flag shares the Spanish colors, red and yellow. But nobody protests that.

*Disclaimer: My mom is a Pueblo Indian from Taos. I'm using the non-PC term she uses. She doesn't care as she as more important things to worry about.

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it"
George Santayana

Well, I did have a long, detailed post written out to state my feelings on the matter. But it would probably just get me dinged and those who really need to read it never will.
So I'll just leave this with another famous quote:
"You can't fix stupid."

He was supposed to be a symbol of healing and reconciliation for the country. - The people that tore it down want nothing to do with healing and reconciliation.

Have a look at a high school history book some time. It will scare you. College kids know nothing about history. They learn political agendas instead now. I could go on and on about this. Probably best if I just stop here.

During the Viet Nam war, military deferments were offered to those who became teachers. Many of the anti-war, anti-gov't. protesters joined the ranks of teachers. I think we are now seeing the products of their teaching efforts. They taught the course were suppose to teach but it was flavored by their own philosophies.

I'm almost 20 years old than my baby brother and he had the "benefit" of those teachers while in school. He is now a flaming liberal, socialist as a result of his schooling.

This "righteous mob" tearing down a historical monument is really no different than ISIS destroying ancient statues in Syria...or the Nazi "Kristallnacht" and book burnings...or even the witch burning mobs of the Inquisition. Same people...different time and place. There's nothing worse than a crowd of people who feel justified to destroy, injure or even kill because they represent a noble cause.

Like Rusty, I, too, am an alumnus of UNC-Chapel Hill. He graduated way, way, way before I did, though.

The fall of Silent Sam isn't something I will comment on here, except to say his loss is a loss for every incoming freshman now and in the future.

The reason? None of them will get to hear, during their inaugural campus tour, an upperclassman explain that his name is "Silent Sam" because he fires his rifle every time a virgin walks by.

That, my friends, is the loss of some truly fine humor.

Besides restitution-at present day cost to replace the statue- I'd like to see the "culture warriors" expelled. Perhaps continuing their education in NC correctional facilities.

I bite my tongue,,,,But,

Am I the only one who gets the impression that the so-called "authorities" are purposefully ignoring these incidents...ie. standing idly by while the hooligans have their free for all? We've seen highways blocked, cars burned, large melees on college campuses (apparently with the blessing of administration and professors)...and nobody does anything. IDK...I just get the impression that these punks are being given a free ticket to do as they please. Back when I was young, and in college, very few folks would have attempted this sort of behavior...and the fun would have been quickly suppressed by the police ( who carried and used billy clubs in those days). Why are they protecting vandals and those who assault law-abiding citizens?

Certain factions seriously believe if you destroy the records of the past you erase actual series of events. Easy to fill in the blanks if you create them. Joe

If rogues can tear Silent Sam down, why can't patriots put it back up (oh, wait, that's because we are too busy making America work?)

I take it that the University nor the State had authorized the removal of this statue. So, the perpetrators should be found and arrested for vandalism. If found guilty, then they should be fined, as part of thier sentencing, the cost to re-install the "Silent Sam" and then the University and State, using policy and law, determine "Sam's" future.
We are consistently reminded that we are a Nation of Laws. Let's start using them.

Rewriting History?

Well, the soviets were great at that.

There is nothing "liberal" in any dictatorship.

Yet Lenin still stands in Seattle. Go figure.
