Some of the same things are happening in New Mexico. Some Pueblo Indians*, especially this generation, have been protesting some Spanish Conquistadors statues and events.
There've been statue unveilings that have been protested and vandalized - Juan De Onate, even a decades old event was canceled in Santa Fe - The Reconquista. They're also trying to get the University of New Mexico seal changed because they find it offensive.
Until now, nobody cared. I guess they must have lots of time to be upset.
The irony is that the Pueblo Indians who are protesting, have Spanish surnames and it's likely their pueblo has a centuries old Spanish name denoting their Spanish heritage. Never mind the fact that all over the state, there are schools, streets, towns ect., named after Conquistadors and places in Spain. Even our flag shares the Spanish colors, red and yellow. But nobody protests that.
*Disclaimer: My mom is a Pueblo Indian from Taos. I'm using the non-PC term she uses. She doesn't care as she as more important things to worry about.
