Holy Cow  (pun intended) I think I'm going to have to look up how to make Opossum Tacos, or BBQ Racoon with dumplings or something such.

The price of meat at the store. A person would be better off hoarding or trading meat instead of that Bitcoin thing.

It's getting to the point a piece of meat is going to end up being a yearly treat..I was floored when I went to buy some steaks on Saturday..HOW MUCH for 12 oz?

Anyway, the price of corn seems to be some of the culprit..More corn to make alcohol gas, less corn for cattle feed. The cost of corn left for feeding cattle of course makes the price of meat go up.

Now the solution to that would be to buy range beef instead of beef that is sent to the feed lots to be fattened up on corm, except range beef is sort of hard to come by any more.

SO....instead of just "Chucking" (Again pun intended) that ole sow of a racoon, it just may end up in the pot instead..Those I seem to have several of coming around in the dark of night.

My daughter had sent me a photo of a opossum she had taken with her trail camera that was getting under her fence..I'll have to send her a way of fixing it, instead of her just schoosing it away...(In case you've never have tried it, opossum is kind of greasy tasting)

It's soon going to be frog season around here, but I've never been a big fan of frog legs though.

What else critters around here? Got the usual rabbits and squirrels. Rabbits Ok, first burnt the hair, before skinning, other wise rabbit fur got everywhere....Squirrels??? About the only thing worth saving is the hind legs, not enough on the back strap or front legs to hardly mess with.

OH, another, but I don't think I'll go for them I hear tell someone back east is already frying up those 17 year cicadids (sp) or some one else is covering them in ..You can get them with either milk chocolate or dark chocolate..I'll pass on that one too.

Now some mud bugs from down La, or Arkansas way I could go for.

Anyway folks, hang on to your wallet this week if you head out to get some sort of meat fixins.

Just saying!!!!!

Well…..

I guess there's always bird hunting! Duck and Turkey help fill the meat area.

I've noticed the increase in beef prices too. We have Kroger stores in Michigan and they run different special every week. This week, you can get 80/20 ground chuck for $2/lb in 3 pound packs. They also have sirloin steaks for around $6/lb. I stock up when it's on sale and stash some in the freezer.

I suspect shipping costs are a big reason for the increases. A lot of companies are experiencing supply issues because of a shortage of truck drivers. They're an aging workforce and companies are having a hard time recruiting qualified employees. Some are offering signing bonuses and will pay new hires while they're being trained. It's a demanding job that's highly regulated and a lot of people aren't interested in that type of work. The pandemic didn't help either.

Yeah, beef is up all over I suppose. But, a couple weeks ago I was at the store and there were three 3-packs of filet mignon for around $7 apiece. Here I see the label and they were marked as I think sirloin steaks. A guy standing by me confirmed I wasn't hallucinating and scarfed one up, too. I ended up grabbing the third pack. "Gettin' over on the man," I was thinking as the "gangsta" came out in me! I told the meat manager the next time I saw him and thanked him. He already heard about it from the store mgr. He just said "Don't bring the subject up to Kenny, PLEASE!" My lips are sealed. I won't re-open the wound!

well you can still get pork loins for 1.99 a pound. tasteless but still protien.

Chop or slice it up and give it a good coating of bar-b-q sauce. Pretty good eating. Slice it and fry in meat grease and it goes good with eggs or any vegetable. Bake it in the oven with apricot jelly. There are more ways too cook pork than there are for alligator and shrimp. :D Larry

I recently bought some $$ USDA Prime steaks for the grill. They looked good, but we couldn't eat them - toughest, most gristle filled meat I've ever seen. Roadkill couldn't be worse.

My wife likes chicken breast because of the white meat but I will also stock
up on thighs when they go on sale, right now Raley's has them at .97 a pound.

London Broil is at 2.97 and pork loins at 1.99 and they will cut it up, if asked.

You just need to buy meat when it goes on sale, these days.
I will NOT pay 3.98 a pound for a dead chicken or $12 a pound for steak, let alone
$24 a pound for Halibut........ sold in 6 oz. packages.

Ever try Pasta, a big salad, soup, a grilled cheese or a waffle with eggs for dinner ?
I can skip meat every now and then, and it is good for you.

My own take on this is that it takes way more corn these days to keep up with the demand for bourbon whiskey. What with the pandemic, the recent elections, and the sheer craziness of completely opposing opinions on so many important subjects, I'd bet that more bourbon is being consumed these days in the U.S. than at any time in history...

Yesterday I went to a little supermarket here on the West end of the Island.
Well stocked meat market and deli.
Large T bone steaks were around $18.50-20.00.
Bought two yards birds instead and grilled them.

One of my hunters on the lease takes care of our
game cams.
He sent me this last night.
Going up mid-week and I can add a porker or two to the deep freezer.

It's not because of fuel production, although one hears this a lot. Having lived in "corn country" I know that the ethanol plant down by the river generated massive amounts of "distillers grain" which is what's leftover after the distilling process whether it be an fuel ethanol plant or liquor production. Distillers grain is used as feed for livestock. So increased ethanol production actually increases the availability of livestock feed.

As a side note, I seriously considered opening a moonshine operation near that plant. No one word notice the smell......

I had a long talk with the meat cutter at my local grocery last week. He said that they are having a hard time getting certain basics like chicken and pork to sell to their customers. He claimed that China recently had to liquidate a large portion of their hogs due to a swine flu outbreak. He further claimed that China is now importing more livestock feed from us, which is causing supply chain issues for U.S. livestock producers. If our farmers can't find feed, they can't raise enough stock to meet demand and the consumer pays more. I don't know if any of this is true, but it makes sense.
