Horrible, horrible grit in my M&P 9 FS trigger

First things first, I'm glad to have the gun. I've been wanting one and I went through numerous hoops to make it happen. Since January I've gone through an SD40, Shield 40, Glock 19, and now finally got the M&P 9. That being said, the trigger is god awful on this thing. Until I get to "the wall" the trigger is as gritty as can be. Feels horrible. Once I get to the break, it's fine.

What can I do SHORT OF BUYING NEW PARTS to fix this issue? Polishing has to help to some extent. I've tried polishing the trigger bar where it meets the striker block, but got nothing from it. Any help guys? My Shield 40 trigger was lightyears better than this with NO work.

EDIT: This gun has a build date of 01-31-2013

1-There is a youtube video on how to polish things up and smooth it out.
2-You could install an Apex trigger for about $100.
3-After you shoot a few hundred rounds, it smooths out quite a bit.

I have opted for option 3.

Search for gritty trigger my friend.

There can be a burr inside the striker block hole that can easily be smoothed to get rid of a bad gritty trigger. There's a video on here showing how... I'm sorry I don't remember the gentleman's name but I should! He posts a lot about M&P's and is great.

Gosh I can see the video in my mind and I can almost picture his screen name.... :p

Mine is gritty too. But I love the gun....so I've put about 1,000 rounds through it and dry fired it a bunch...has gotten better but not exactly what I'd like.... I've decided to put the Apex trigger in... ordered and on it's the way :D

I had a issue with my wifes S&W M&P full size .45 on the right side of the gun after taking off the slide my trigger bar was rubbing the slide stop. It was interfering with the right side slide stop..Took a file in between the two worked it a bit. then polished the safty plunger bar trigger sear striker contact points all with a dremel tool.. mine is smooth and slick though I can still feel the safty plunger getting pushed in at the start of the trigger pull it's smooth till I hit a brick wall and then it breaks clean like glass.. I didn't take anything apart but I would also reshape the safty plunger and polish it too.. my trigger out of the box was heavy scratchy to the point of feeling it and hearing it from acrost the room.. The factory trigger was a joke worst trigger I ever felt, I had cap guns with better triggers when I was a kid... Fixed it in less then a hour. Dry firing 20 times or so also helped a lot.. Oh I used Remington oil AKA "Rem Oil" with Teflon in a spray can on everything when I was done.. George

Held a rand new off the delivery truck M&P Pro 5" at the LGS. It had the new CORE grip pad. Trigger was absolutely the worst I've EVER felt in a handgun. Mushy, gritty, zero reset. I've owned many M&Ps and this was terrible. I had hoped the new ones would be more like my Shield trigger- not even close. Very disappointed.

Let me know how you like it, I have one coming. May also get the apex striker blocker if grit doesn't improve. The trigger should reduce the play, but grit may remain.

Shoot the snot out of it...I really like the trigger now. Plus, I'm saving my pennies for ammo.

I made the "Gritty Trigger Pull" video and I can say that maybe after a few thousand rounds, the burr in the blocker bore may have worn down. I am a perfectionist and I wanted it fixed. I bought the Apex kit and was hoping that would fix the gritty pull, but it did not fix the issue. The burr in the blocker bore was causing the stock blocker and the Apex blocker to drag on the burr. After I removed the burr, the gritty pull was totally gone. A couple hours work to do it right.

I am a former Tool and Die Maker and Mechanical Engineer. I find it unbelievable that S&W would not correct the issue of a burr in the blocker bore. I can only guess that S&W first bores the blocker bore hole, and then bores the striker bore hole. The boring of the striker bore hole is causing the burr in the blocker bore hole, as both bores intersect for the operation of the striker blocker. This could easily be fixed by running hones, etc., in those bore holes to remove any excess metal, but it is obvious they don't do that.

Shoot it a lot. It will get much better. when i bought mine the gunshop owner let me pick the one with the best trigger (he had 3 or 4) - they were all gritty and i was lucky to get the "least' gritty gun. It bothered me for about 100 rounds. with about 500 rounds through it i don't even notice it now. I wouldn't spend the money for the Apex until you shoot it for awhile.

Scientists tell us that humans are the most adaptable animals on the planet.

So, ignore it and shoot the pistol. With time, you will not notice it.

Hopefully this is the case. Going from the Shield with a pretty good trigger to a Glock with a great feeling trigger (and ****ty ergos) to this horrible trigger is.... different.

Shoot a thousand rounds or so of difficult to obtain expensive ammo out of it and the grittiness will lessen a little bit, but it still will not be much of a trigger. ( I understand that trigger feel can be subjective. What I call an awful trigger pull some people think is ok.) Or you can break down and put Apex components in for about $100 and get a pretty decent trigger. Something that approximates Glocks standard trigger, and something that S&W should of, and could have done straight from the factory.

You're right to say that trigger feel is subjective. I always cringe when I hear people say that a Glock trigger is "pretty good". The trigger in a Glock is terrible so, how bad is the M&P when people say the Glock is good?

A good trigger can be found on many pistols. The 1911 is a good example. However, a Glock is not one of them.

Meh, I was having some fun. After about a year and a lot of rounds I upgraded the sights and had an Apex USB installed. Just the USB gave me a smooth trigger and I could finally feel the reset point.

I decided to change my pistol after handling some high dollar iron at the range. The upgrades haven't changed my Ford into a Porsche, but it is better.
