How do you carry?

Why in the world would you leave a gun in the car? That is just irresponsible gun ownership. Many guns are stolen from vehicles. If you decide to carry and your work does not permit then you have two choices, one is not carry while going to work or carry concealed at work and take your chances.

I agree to the extent that you shouldn't lock a firearm in your car if in a crime-laden area or it will be unattended for extended periods of time like an airport or train station, but that aside it's a viable, practical and sometimes necessary option - been doing it for 30+ years and never had a problem. Heck, cop cars have them locked in plain view - in fact, our motorcycles had M-4s mounted and locked externally - cops aren't in the habit of brining their long guns into the donut shops. :-) Ultimately, I want to keep my weapon on my person, that's what I have it for, but sometimes...

I am confident that at one time or another, the vast majority of members on this site have locked firearms in their vehicles without incident, especially long guns.

Where I live, if I were to enter federal property, such as the VA Hospital for treatment, and park my car in their parking structure, I would be subject to arrest if discovered. It is a federal crime to bring a firearm onto federal property, even if it is locked in a tamper-resistant steel box which could be welded to the car frame. The mere presence of the gun in my parked car is in violation of law.

My only alternative to locking it in a strongbox in the car while on government grounds, would be to leave it at home. At that point, it is just a useless paperweight if an incident occurs. I live in a high crime region of my state (Greater Detroit area), and it is almost normal to hear about the number of persons who were shot on any one day. I don't want to stop to gas up while unarmed and have some clown stick a gun in my face and tell me to get out of my new car. He (or she) might just shoot me anyway for the rush. So a lockbox is my only alternative to placing myself in danger of either arrest or robbery.

Is your lockbox actually going to help you? Its going to be locked up

I would assume he uses the lock box once he gets to work but only he knows for sure.
Yea so he risks exposing his weapon putting his weapon in or off at a federal location? I mean i wouldnt do it, but i guess he does. The risk of one getting caught bringing a weapon into federal grounds is probably orders of magnitude far greater than ever needing it

Edit. Nevermind. I forgot where he lives. Still just me, i wouldnt do it. But his choice!

Given your scenario, I fully agree; however restricted areas weren't a factor in the comment I responded to. I was responding to a general statement that it's foolish to lock a firearm in a vehicle.

I think that you need a few options. Normally I carry a P229 or P228 OWB about 3:30. I often carry a J frame on ny ankle. On car trips, or long interview days, I use a Galco Miami classic. If you can't carry comfortably, you will stop carrying eventually.
Oh, I also have a FN .25 that fits in my back pocket behind my badge case.

The use of a lockbox would only be for the time I would be required to be on federal or restricted property. At all other times, the loaded pieces would be on my person and immediately accessible if needed.

I may not be a rocket scientist (?) of corporate CEO, but my daddy didn't raise no fool either.

I'm retired so if you see me reaching into my pants pocket I'm probably not grabbing a snickers bar. :D
Sometimes a primary with a bug. Just depends how I dress.

Not able to carry at work. When in carry, I carry mostly in the appendix I feel is what works best for me , I carry my IWB leather kusiak holster. Comfortable all day ..

I started carrying in about 1973. Open carry in VA and in NC.
I finally got my CCL in 2012 here in Wisconsin.
I never had a reason to pack at work. There were plenty of tools and such to smack someone with on the construction jobs. So the piece was in the trunk.
I never took anything close to the nuke power houses I worked on. Big trouble with even having a round in the car.

I am retired on disability now.
I prefer IWB but sometimes pocket carry a BUG.
On long road trips I like a shoulder rig and IWB.
Depending on where and how far from home I could have 2 J frames.
Or a J and K , N or L along.

Not necessarily, especially if you take proper precautions.

There are other choices. Lock the gun in a secure carrier, then cable lock it to a seat bracket under the seat. Or lock it in a secure gun carrier, then put the carrier in the trunk, cable lock it to the spare or some secure fastener, then lock the trunk.

Most punks who steal from cars work in a smash-and-grab style. They most likely aren't going to spend more than a minute, maybe two minutes, going through a car looking for goodies. Just don't leave other tempting stuff out in plain sight in a locked car...stuff that would give someone an incentive to break in.
Feel free to take your chance, I refuse to leave my firearm in a vehicle unattended, that is just plain irresponsible to my way of thinking. I know this for sure if I never leave it in a vehicle it will never be stolen from my vehicle.

What about leaving firearms in your home when you're not there? Wouldn't that be irresponsible if they were stolen? The same argument could be made.

Home is fully alarmed/video and monitored so not a valid comparison at all!

Doesn't mean anything. My work place is alarmed and had video and when we had a break in one night we say a video of a guy steeling stuff. Stuff is still gone, stolen but we have a video for.....?
