How do you conceal your large handgun?

A good jacket tailored to the rig helps.

I forgot to add that belts and holsters are half the equation - what's the covering garment? I know belts and holsters pretty well - it's HIDING the gun that eludes me.

For me, it's the positioning of the gun on the body that is more important than the covering garment.

An IWB holster with aggressive cant angle, and the gun positioned juuuuuuuust behind the "point" of my hip.....this allows for the best positioning to avoid the grip frame "printing" as well as allowing one to sit back in a chair/auto seat with comfort.

I am a large guy, and have been known to pack a 8 3/8" Model 57 .41 mag under my jacket in winter in a Bianchi X15 rig. Doesn't work so well in the summer months...but I never feel "under dressed" in winter..

I usually carry a J frame in my pocket but will at times carry a 1911, N or K frame. Then I'll use a shoulder holster or a pancake holster. I've found even a wind breaker will cover my 3 inch 629 in a pancake holster. I'm 5' 11" and 175 pounds. I don't care much for IWB holsters but have a couple of them but for smaller guns like Makarov and 3 inch 1911.
We don't have to worry if our gun or holster shows here in Michigan but I do try and keep my guns concealed. It's much easier this time of year when I wear a heavier coat to conceal my bigger guns.

Something not mentioned yet is the ride height of your pants. Low rise jeans are great for 19 year old girls, but not for somebody trying to hide a gun.

Also, the pants need to fit over your belly, and stay there.

Right, and my initial lighthearted post was along those lines - most professionals aren't able to dress like homeless surfer cops. ;)

However, I'd argue that it's not really concealed if everyone in the business knows it's there. The SIG P229s that the Secret Service guys carry aren't even "full sized guns" (really), and I'd imagine everyone on this thread would note them under their cover garments while waiting for the elevator.

Part of it has to do with their mode of carry: appendix IWB under a cover garment is a whole lot more on the down-low than is an OWB rig behind the hip.

This thread was addressed to people who carry large handguns; it was not an invitation for "professional" fashion advice, or speculation on how easily a "professional" could tell if someone is carrying.

When I served as an 0311 in the USMC I was a professional too, but didn't wear a suit and tie, so not all "professionals" wear monkey-suits. A true professional would not call themselves as such and would not critique others clothes.

I hope you picked up on my light-hearted tone of voice throughout this post.

Sorry if I touched a nerve: I thought 0311s were tough guys. :)

In all seriousness, I really do not want my posts to somehow offend folks here. For what it's worth, I don't think anyone comes here to insult anyone else. I try to read posts with that in mind - if there's two ways to take something, I try to assume that the poster meant it nicely. (I did it just for this weekend, and it turns out that I was correct. :) ) Life seems happier this way. :)

I carried a S&W Model 1076 every day from 1990 to 2008. A large and heavy handgun. I experimented with a huge variety of holsters. Frankly, if at all possible the only comfortable and effective option was a shoulder holster. Law enforcement administrators may hate them but it is what it is.

In all seriousness I posted how I saw it. I try not to post ambiguous statements with a slight air of humor but smelling of snide undertones. Life is much happier that way :) :)
