How Do You Store Guns In Your Safe

I'm speaking of handguns, Do you store them in the boxes they came in or do you remove them from the box and keep the box elsewhere.?
The top shelf of my safe has quite few boxes stacked up, some of them are new and never fired , some are slightly used having been fired.
My lower shelves have pistol racks with mostly used handguns that came with no box.
Just curious ?

I have a couple in their factory boxes and they are on the top shelf way in the back.

I have a few just lying on the shelves. Safe has a nice rug type interior. Many of my revolvers are on the door. They hang on safe company installed racks by plastic coated hooks in the trigger guards, upside down.

Have done this for years and no problems with any of the 3 methods.

I bought plastic coated wire dish racks at KMart or another department store. This allows for 8 handguns on one rack, all stacked in a neat row.

Boxes (to me) are for saving, collecting, and retaining value of more rare or old guns; not for storage. Guns tend to slide around in boxes and damage the box and finish on the gun.

For several reasons the guns are stored in gun socks, I don't need to lokc up cardboard and that same cardboard can damage the finish on shiny metal things. I also keep some coins in there and cardboard is a killer.

I keep my gun boxes in a large Rubbermaid container. The guns are in racks in the safe.

How do you store guns in your safe

I do all of the above depending on room in the safe. I also have a lockable metal cabinet that I keep boxes and holsters in. I have a very large safe that believe it or not gets full.

Baking trays

I bought an extra shelf for my National Security safe and four baking trays. Two trays per shelf, six or more handguns per tray, depending on the handgun size.

I store mine in gun rugs hanging from the upper shelf. Guns with boxes go on the shelf.

I collect mainly pre-WW2 handguns of all ilk. Would that I had original boxes for all of them..

I built three slide out racks that stand them vertically for about 20 of so. However I've added a large number of new pieces and also have a couple of cameras and 6 or 7 lenses in there plus about a half dozen rifles and computer back-up drives.
Things are currently carefully piled where ever I can find a flat space.

I really need another safe but haven't figured out where to put it.

In order to custom fit a handgun rack in my safe, I made an elongated "L" of the proper length, then near the top edge, I drilled for 5/16" dowels. Dowels, approximately 4" in length, were glued in these holes and the handguns slide in on the dowels and are slightly suspended off the shelf it all rest on. The dowels need to be parallel to the leg of the L serving as the base. The bottom part of the L should be about as wide as your longest handgun.

Pistols can be berthed a bit closer together than revolvers. 5/16" dowel will accommodate any gun from .380 up. If all your guns are .44 or .45, use 3/8" dowel.

I store mine in original boxes...all my collector grade..then some vertically in the holes that are factory made in safe..Liberty, some on rubberized racks, some hanging horizontally below shelves on room saving rubberized tip hangers (purchased but don't remember their real name), Many on the door hanging bag (my loaded ones in case I need them immediately) and a few where the fit laying down as I don't want to spend $ on a new safe. My safe is temp and humidity controlled.
