how many guns is too many?

every time i buy a gun i tell myself it's the last, and then i always find myself lusting after another one. my first purchase was an M&P9c, and then i bought a 3913 about 6 months later, and a 4516 about 2 months after that. now, for whatever reason, i feel the need for the M&P45c. i can't understand it. i can only carry one at a time. why do i need so many? my reason for buying a second gun was to have a backup, but the third gun was my random need for having a 45 and i didn't really have a legitimate reason for the purchase.

i love smith and wesson's third generation pistols, and equally love the M&P's. now i get torn between 9's and 45's, and i have one of each for my third gens, and now i want one of each for my M&P's. i just can't understand why i need it, why my M&P9c or my 3913 for that matter aren't enough. i am a firm believer that shot placement makes a bigger difference than caliber, if i ever end up in a situation where i need to draw my weapon(i hope i never do) i see no reason why a 9 won't be enough. yet i keep looking at the 45c every chance i get.

opinions?

I quit lying to myself years ago. I also stopped beating myself up about it. My conscience is clear and I can go out and but 3 guns and lay down and sleep like a baby. Too many guns is a concept that I just can't get my mind around.

Every gun I have I have for a different reason and purpose. For one reason or another I love every one of them. Perhaps when I run out of capacity to love and appreciate ALL my guns then I have to many. But that ain't likely to happen.

Do you have to move guns out of the sink before you do dishes?;do you have to clear guns off the kitchen table to serve dinner? (guns being cleaned, repaired or photographed do not count) do you step on guns with your barefeet in the middle of the night when nature calls? No? then you don't have too many guns.

You mentioned 3rd gen Smiths in 9 & 45, there's a whole line of 10 mm 3rd gens available too.

Better pick up some .40's too. There are some very cool 3rd Gen 40 calibers. A Model 4013TSW was what got me hooked on 3rd Gens, on this Forum, as a matter of fact! Now I've got two of those & a few other treasures...not near as many as a lot of people here, but I feel my little collection is coming along fine. I'm going boating this weekend & I'm taking them all with me!;):D:cool::rolleyes:

Who can you afford to hire to clean and oil all those guns? No one, I know. So it does become obvious that you really can own too many guns. The key is that no one else should be in a position to tell you that you have too many. But if or when you decide for yourself you have too many, then you do. And there is no one competent to say you're wrong. Just as no one should tell you the same thing (especially a government jerk.)

So how do you conclude you might have too many? I don't know. I did conclude that once a few years back, and I wound up selling about half of the one's I'd accumulated. Sure, you may lose a little money, but then you've got cash to blow on other newer ones. And there are hints. I was in my gun room, digging for something. I pulled out a very nice 1950 target 4". I knew I had one, but it was perfect. This one had some signs it might have been refinished along the way. But I have no clue when I picked it up, how much I paid, or from who. It was one of those uh-oh moments. This stuff is happening again.

My gun show Partner has an affliction. Old Joe feels an obligation to clean and oil all his guns once every 6 months. It takes him a whole day according to him. But the last few times he did it, it ended up running into a 2nd day. He's starting to talk like he's considering selling off one or two of his very best. His reasoning is they're too good to shoot so someone else should have the pleasure of shooting them. He might never sell them because he's pretty sure he'll never find others as good. I pretty much can convince him not to sell. I just beat on him for a while and ask what he'd do with the money if he did sell. He can't get any interest if he puts the money in a bank. And he'll probably have enough money to pay for lunch tomorrow either way.

And I'm worried that in the last 10 years I've only shot one K22. Its the gun of choice for me to take out. I have no idea why I still have others. If I could sucker Blake (one of our gun show buddies) into parting with his 2nd model, I'd probably make that my gun of choice. Maybe I could convince him into some trade. Most folks here would probably like to have K155, my current first line gun. Why do I own all this stuff? I guess because it doesn't eat anything, and it doesn't fill the stall with manure.

Sideways 8 or infinity..... sadly every time i buy a new or used revolver i'm already thinking 4 or 5 down the road, then i switch "genres" i'll buy 2 or 3 revolvers then switch over to 2 or 3 lever actions... it just never ends...

OK but if they sink the boat that might be a sign>>>>>>>>that you need a bigger boat!!

A couple of cowboys were riding across the desert and were desperately thirtsty. Their canteens were empty and they hadn't seen water for some time.

Suddenly they came upon a watering hole. Of course their horses were thirsty as well and waded into the water to drink, stirring up the mud. One cowboy went to the far side of the watering hole where the water was still clear but the other one just plopped right down between the horses.

The first cowboy said, "Why don't you come drink over here where the water is clear?"

The second said, "It don't matter, I aim to drink it all anyways!"

I stopped counting years ago . . As long as there's a spot to keep them, I'm okay. . . Those Costco safes are a real bargain.

The raw numbers pretty well stabilized a while back. Nowadays I sell a few, buy a few, and enjoy doing my thing. Compared with all the other possible silly vices I refuse to be remorseful about this one.

It's all just stuff anyway.

I brought number 38 today. If you would have told me this 18 months ago I would not have believed it. It is just another hobby. I don't know how much money I would lose if I started selling them now. I might even make money. In two years I am sure I'd make a good profit.

I suspect that my buying will be slowing down now. But I've said that before. "I can stop any time I want" hum? Yea.

I have enough. Besides, the safe is almost full.
