How many mags for an AR?

I wouldn't want to put a number on it........

But this would be a good start! :D

I'm always looking for good deals on mags and will keep buying them as long
as they're affordable. They'll soon be worth their weight in gold!!

6 new GI in wrap, 4 new commercial, 4 used GI, and 5 Gen 3 Magpuls. I will purchase more in case needed by family members here in Colorado Springs who mostly have at least one AR each. I have one plus a stripped lower and likely will buy one more. I intend to have at least 2000rnds on hand and components for reloading. Here in Colorado we have been targeted for gun control. I won't be caught naked again. Many folks on Southern CO have a similar conservative mindset. The Northern part of the state is Lost!

The correct number of mags? That number would be based on availibility, cost, and need.
Right now, they are hard to find and the price is high and with pending legislation, you need to 'grandfather' as many as you can.
I have been buying mags a few at a time for as long as I have had my 'Sprting Rifle' and now have close to 50, both GI and P-Mags. I also have been doing the same for my Glock 22 and have around 15 for it.
I would like to say I foresaw the polictics coming, but the extent I didn't.
I have thought from the begining of the second term, nobama would try for a AWB of some kind and the mag capicity was the most likely target.
So, to answer the question, as many as you can. The exact number is up to the individual and what they feel comfortable with.

I agree entirely. And that is why I just bought some more mags!:D

no one man can survive a firefight past the standard military issue munitions.

you need 7 total mags. 6 of them on your vest and 1 in the AR.

210 total rounds and 7 total mags. anything more is just for show or for others to take over your corps.

I don't rock 24 mags every time I take the rifle out. I simply possess them.

Mags are wear parts....not to mention under constant capacity attack by anti-liberty legislators.

More is better....however many one can afford, IMO.

Back in the 90's when I got my first 1911A1 it came with 1 USGI magazine. By good fortune I picked more USGI magazines at a gun show for $20 if you bought x5. After 20 years of constant use I finally wore one out. If I lived in a free state I think a standard "combat load" of 7 would be about right throwing one more as a spare bringing the total to x8 30 round magazines. Given my limitations in California I have x2 5 rounders for hunting an the 10 rounder that came with my rifle. But when I bought my rifle you could get 20 rounds of 223 for $5 a box all day. I only bought my first 9mm after Wal-Mart started selling 9mm cheeper than 38 Special. My P95 came with x2 10 round magazines to which I bought one additonal 10 rounder for a total of three. If used and enjoyed but not abused magazines should last a long time.

That begs two more important questions:

1. How many AR-15s do you have?

2. How much longer will the government keep beating the drums to ban these magazines?

John

You should have as many AR mags as you have ammo to fill them.

You should have ammo by the case and magazines by the dozen.

Buy these things when they're available and you'll always be ahead of the game.

so is the trigger and the spring for the trigger. buffer tube spring is also wear part.

i think it is kind of silly to invest in a thousand dollars worth of mags. you should put that money into another ar15 instead, or ammo, or spare parts for it. cycle the mags during training and you will never wear them out.

shtf moment, you will not be able to survive over 210 rounds. people keep forgeting this and think they will turn into rambo.

IMO, the guys with small amounts of mags will be the guys wishing they would have bought more "if" the mag ban ever passes.

It's just like the guys who are going crazy buying ammo right now, because they didnt have enough to start with. Those of us who have been stock piling ammo for years are the ones who arent affected by the price hikes. We get to sit back and mumble those words "we told you so". There is no such thing as over prepared.

I have 8 for the AR. Way more ammo than will fit in said 8.

Btw, Liberty arms in CO has over a thousand for sale (C-products 5.45). I have 5 on the way so I can't vouch completely, but seems good. $17.99 each, not bad in today's market.

I agree that the threat of a mag ban makes me believe it would be a good idea to have more mags. I was just wondering how many is too many if there is no ban.

If I would have had 500 mags two months ago I could have sold half of them and paid off my mortgage. :p

I'm going to get 20. That will be 10 for reserve, and 10 for rotated use. So far I have 3 Magpuls and three D&H. I kind of like the metal ones. Is there an advantage to Magpul? What are you boys using in the sandbox? What is the military issuing now?

the boys i know in the sandbox prefer the p mags and they tell me that you can keep them fully loaded as the dust cover takes the pressure off the feeding lips thus making them more reliable than the metal examples.

that and their magazines are constantly being swapped out between missions and sometimes you will get stuck with a "lemon" damaged metal mag.

Mine don't have dust covers... Should I not keep my pmags loaded?

The dust covers are just that "dust covers". They're not designed to keep pressure off the feed lips. That's a myth. Many will say it's okay to leave your mags loaded some will say it's not. Magpul has said keeping them loaded will not affect the feed lips. I keep about 10 of mine loaded and the rest are put up.

Once the dust settles a guy should be able to get AR mags for around $10 - $15 each, that's when I'll buy my fill. 10 isn't so bad.

I love this kind of confidence in our legislators!

Assuming our legislators will not screw US to save THEIR jobs gives me as much confidence as Captain Smith announcing that "the pool is open" right after the Titanic hits the iceberg.

If I were living in a free state I would have bought cheap 30-rd mags by the dozen. Instead I ended paying 2-3x the cost of a 30-rd mag for the 10-rnd ones mandated by the great state of CA.

I still ended up with 16 mags, but my 160-rnd capacity pales in comparison to what I could have with 16 30-rnd mags. :D

The pool is open!! LOL I never heard that one! :D

I bet the law makers are pulling their hair out wondering which way to vote.... Sooth the unknowing libs or calm the millions of gun owners....

dang son....ye of little faith...

The Polymer Magazine (PMAG™) is a lightweight 5.56 NATO, M-16 compatible magazine. The PMAG™ features a pop-off storage/dust cover that alleviates pressure from the magazine feed lips, allowing for storage of loaded magazines without risk of feed lip creep that often causes malfunction in standard aluminum magazines. PMAG™ utilizes a resilient stainless steel spring for corrosion resistance.
