How many mags for an AR?

no no no no. yall do not have enough. When the government tries to take over and civil war comes up, or if someone invades us, we ALL will have to fight. Full camo gear from the knee pads to the elbow pads, combat boots and helmet, googles, etc etc.
You will have to find a vest that holds ALOT of mags, then hire you a helper for when the time comes, you strap a vest on him/her, throw a rut pack on his/her back and load it all down with magazines, rope, trip wire, night vision, and matches. So you need a min. of 200 30 round magazines. Oh and dont forget to purchase new followers and springs for all those magazines, so when we are all 5 years into a war, you and keep those magazines in tip top shape!!!!!!!

On a lighter note, I dont own any pmags. I want some, but at these prices I believe i can wait. I have 8 30 round green follower metal mags, and 4 thermo mold 20 round mags. I believe that is enough for me, I just want a pmag just to say I have one:)

...in a SHTF situation, I'll be carrying lots of mags full of ammo...

Not me. If it really hits the fan, there will be PLENTY of those Call of Duty playing preppers lying around in the streets with oodles of loaded pmags tucked in their queer little "tactical vests". All I'll have to do is walk around and collect them.

The number of mags you need is based on what you want to accomplish. Many people are concerned that those opposed to the US Constitution will ultimately create a situation where mags will be unavailable. Since magazines do wear out/get lost/suffer damage, if there is no resupply you'll need many more than you might otherwise think. If resupply is no issue, 3-6 should be fine. If not, 15+ might make more sense.

Nah, if its those call of duty players you can bet they dont have any Pmags whats so ever. They probably have a sniper rifle and they are hiding out over in the bushes.

When I think about the answer to this question it would be how many can I carry. Certainly if the SHTF I am going to be taking my AR but I also plan to bring the .35 and a 12 ga. and all my hand guns so just how much room in the truck can be used for weapons and how much can be used for food and water and clothing will play into the answer.

I have a big truck! ;)

Food and water will be a tough one. I'm not a prepper and that's not where I was going with this, but it is interesting to consider.

I never thought of taking all my stuff anywhere. There's no way I could. So if I had 200 mags all loaded and left 150 behind, you're right, I'm making it easy for the next guy.

I can carry 10 mags easily. Then I'll get 10 more for storage. I haven't received my D&H with Magpul followers yet, but the idea of an aluminum mag with a proven follower is a good one. Do these plastic Magpuls really hold up?

Dont do limits by looking at what if SHTF. "Well i can only carry 10 so why leave 200 behind" .....yea ok....since we're playing WHAT IF......what if this particular SHTF made you stay at home then 200 loaded mags are a lot better then 10. Better to have and not need then need and not have.

If you look at it this way. Why stock anything that you could possibly leave for the "next guy"? Too much food or water and the next guy can get it! Better yet (god forbid) dont have anything because what if you were involved in a deadly car accident 2 days before the SHTF and you left everything to "the next guy". Or what if "the next guy" was actually a good guy who becomes a valuable asset and all because you had a few extra mags to spare. Just sayin......anything is possible when you play "what if"! Buy as many as you can comfortably afford. Even if its one or a million

I currently have 16 - 30rd PMags (4 in use, 12 in storage / spares).
I'll be getting more once available at a 'reasonable' price.

They'd be hiding in the bushes using those other downed Call of Duty playing preppers lying around in the streets for bait. :D

Im a defend what I have, hide and watch.. Great 360 field of view to over 500 yards.

25+ 30rd,20+ 20rd,PMags per MSR. :D

Im not trying to flame anyone, I myself have 12 maggazines that I have collected over the years.
Going out in one day and buying up all the magazines you can find is fine. If you got the money and that is what you want, go for it!!! But how many rounds can one magazine take before it gets wore out? What i am getting at is, if a situation comes up where AR mags would not be available, what do you think will happen to ammo? Its hard enough to find ammo right now unless you pay alot for it. If the government passes a bill that stops the sales of ARs, magazines, etc etc you will literally be able to find ZERO ammo.
If you have 15 mags that are 30 rounds then you are at 450 rounds. I will shot high and say the AVERAGE person has 1000 rounds of ammo. So if ammo is gone, you will roughly reload all the magazines roughly 2 1/2 times.

I bought (like many others),all my mags over time and waaaay before all this happened or was even thought about by "average" people. Same went for ammo. As for the ammo. I'm glad friends and other people I know are waaaaay above that 1000rds average on hand (we are also older on average too). We'd shoot that much each,in just one day at the range or compititions and that wouldn't count other weapons we were shooting. Then we'd spend all week reloading the shot factory brass back into inventory.

Some of us saw this coming and over stocked waaaay before hand while the average people were still saying "No,it'll never happen". :D

I have close to 90 for two Ars and 14 for my 15-22. Mainly Pmags, Lancers, Troy and D&H. I have 4 elanders, one Surefire 60 and one 48 rounds Lancer. Most at regular prices. I don't think its too much and hell I want more. It became a hobby in its self finding mags at a good deal during this panic. Once mags are a a regular price all the time I will pick up more. You simply cannot have enough mags.

Two mag pouches plus one in the rifle is a standard combat load. That is a total of seven mags.

That should be enough ammo to get you into some very deep kim-chee.

"Fix Bayonets!"

You got a bayonet don't you?

I think I can have enough mags and 20 sounds like enough for me. Heck, 10 sounded like enough a week ago!

Bayonet!! I need a bayonet! Where can I find a good bayonet?

I actually looked for the M203 grenade launcher, and found one, but the price of grenades and the paperwork to get even ONE is just insane.

I must have shot a hundred grenades off in war games. Those and artillery simulators were my two favorite toys Uncle Sam provided. :D

LOL, I live in Kalifornia so my M&P-15 Sport came with a single 10 round magazine. Believe it or not I had to look high and low for a couple 5 round magazines so i could use it for hunting. 5+5+10=20 just call me Rambo.

I have 2 20 round and two 30's. that adds up to 101 rounds assuming one in the chamber. I can think of no scenerio that has any roots in reality that I can't handle with 100 rounds. That said, when mags are more readily available I'll add a few more.

A friend of mine said a min of ten per rifle, so as of today I have 24 for my one AR. Yes, I roll like that. LOL

Will probably get more as I find good prices. The way it's looking, we may well be able to get the rifles, but the mag restrictions aren't out of the woods yet.
