How many of you collect guns from 1980 to the Present

This 60-10 is a little "newer" than I normally buy but I have to admit, it is my favorite model 60.

OK,

Let this thread ride for half a day to see how it shakes out. What I'm seeing are some great guns that belong to some really good folks. Some are pretty interesting, actually...

What I'm not seeing is any focus on a particular model or type. Say someone trying to build a collection around stainless 3" N frames for an example. Or a great accumulation of some type of K-frames (seeing as they are now a gun of the past ). Love to see all the modern underlug K-22's...

What I'm trying to get at...would be an attempt by some of use to categorize these guns. And have a conversation of what those categories might be.

Go back to the 50's and early 60's and I can speak pretty well to the various 4-screw N-frame and the variants. Those are becoming very serious guns. Skip up the next 20 years and we all have an ability to get ahead of the next curve. It would be pretty cool to see the member of this forum ride out that next wave....;)

Giz, I think part of the problem also is how much interest is there when certain guns are easily available before "demand" hits. As an example I bought a "Blood Work" 627 for $395. because I wanted an 8shot 357, and a Model 520 for $450 because I thought it was neat. Both guns of late have "cult" appeal and when they were readily available people were buying "harder" to get guns. I think it just takes time. Also most of the guns from the 70's on have been bought with the idea of using them . As they get older more people start thinking of putting them into some kind of order. That being said, a close friend in the Smith collecting fraternity put together one of the finest collection of 629's that was both award winning and featured in SHOOTING TIMES mag. a number of years ago. A number of members of this forum will know exactly who I am talking about. The fun for him was assembling and displaying it. Today he has converted some of it to collectible and drivable performance Ford Mustangs. None the less It was a hell of a fine collection of "modern" stainless guns that was second to none. He identified a catagory and became the authority on it along with the help of other current forum members as well as Roy and some other factory people.

I have a large number of S&W revolvers and only 2 are not either pinned and recessed or both. I have a 586 no dash with 8 3/8 inch barrel and adjustable front sight and I have a 686 no dash with 6 inch barrel. All the rest are made between 1952 and 1982. It's just a preference thing and I won't buy one with an internal lock period.

well, this is a great thread!(K frames etc NYPD-all shooters)Makes me think of two S&Ws that I traded for something that was new at the time 1 was a 3" Model 10 (TC Polis) bought New (Long gone) The other a 5", 5" 629 unfluted cylinder Long Gone still have my 640 +P+ no reason to trade for the new flavor of the month any more, just a little older and alot wiser and alot more patient. Ok to clarify Product codes 102504,102509 64s 3" RB & 102506 4" RB

Ok,

Again, I'll try to go back to the premise...What categories are worth focusing on in the 1980 to present. I'm not seeing much of folks focusing their collecting interests. The IL is a non-issue if you've decided it's not for you, so what are you collecting...?:)

I like the new ones and the old, here is a few of the new type and a few of the old. There is also a little less than 200 in between them.

I LIKE THEM ALL, if they say Smith & Wesson :D

I have had some modern guns and still own one with an IL..I prefer the S&W Bangor Punta Years..It just seems to me that those were some of the best S&W's put out.

Sir, I'm not a collector, but I do have a couple of the less common guns from this era, a Model 25-9 and a 624, both 4-inch.

Regarding categories, one might be "holdovers" from previous eras--the same guns, but without pinned barrels--28-3s, late Model 10s, that sort of thing. Another (admittedly very broad) one might be the various full-lugged guns. Then maybe Mountain Guns, exotic materials, "gun of the month" oddities, PC guns, and so on.

All the different varieties make the era confusing, but in some ways, that makes it easier for a collector to narrow down on one little sub-group.

JMHO, anyway.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I'm not a collector either but I have several of the modern examples and they are among my favorites. They include: a 27-3 4", made in early '88; a 617-1 4", made in '93; and a 686-6 6" manufactured in 2006. I've got some older ones, too, so I don't discriminate. Obviously, the 686 has the lock and, no, I couldn't care less that it does. I took it to the range this morning and it is among the most accurate of my handguns.

all this talk made me almost spend it all today on a 3 in. lew horton to go with all my other 629's but 900.00 is to much.

I have some nice S&W's from the 50's, 60's and 70's, but I like the newer stuff better. All the older handguns are beautifully fit and finished, but each of them seems to have some little quirk.
The newer stuff, fom my 629-2 Mountain Revolver on, shoot better and seem much more durable.
I buy S&W's to use. In my mind they are the hot rod of handguns. Accuracy, power, portability, cutting edge metallurgy, all wrapped up in a classic design. Excellent blend of looks and performance.
Mountain Guns and the Scandium 329 PD are some of my favorites.

"Collector" Too Fancy

Gizamo: I think the term "Collector" is too sophisticated a title for me. I'm more of an accumulator. On a general scale, sure, I "collect" S&W's. On a more narrow scale, I pass some models up (like the nickle 19 for $450 today) 'cause I can't afford/justify all of them. Wish to hell I could! Certain Smiths trip my trigger more than others (e.g. unfluted cylinders, round butt grips, L-frames).

Interesting thread, thanks!

Any post 1980 Smith revolver that is known to shoot.

ANY post 1980 N frame. I have fired them all ,and have yet to find a dog in the bunch. The odd calibers appeal to me. A Smith & Wesson revolver chambered in 44-40 ,,or ,45 Colt ctg. be it blue or stainless, really gets my motor running.

Smaller and unusual post 1980 Smiths.

K frames made in smaller runs, or those that have become very desireable.

The 13-2 3"

The model 547, whether 3" or 4"

Any of the 3" model 66s'

The 16-4s in 32 H&R Magnum, scarce and extremely shootable.

The 696 was made in 1997 , one heck of a revolver ,,

OK,

Again, trying to see what if any guns folks are focusing on. Personally, I'd like to put together a collection of round butt N-Frame 3 inch guns. I'm going to limit this collection to pre MIM guns, which will rule out some examples. I'm also going to go for stainless in my collection. Now if an occasional example of a MIM gun sneaks it's way in....great. But it is not going to be my focus.

There are going to be some pretty hard guns to find in this group. So a 625 Classic Carry becomes the grail gun, or a Lew Horton 657 or a etc...

My point here is that you can actually pic a particular style of handgun and cross many calibers in the same basic style. One of each, so to speak... And yet, build an interesting accumulation/collection...:)

And a few more with the same but dressed a little different!

A couple of these guns a rather hard to find. It took me a few years to find them all!

Wow!!!

Now see, there are few fanatics out there besides me...:D

That's the kind of focus I'm speaking of...An excellent collection of modern guns that with some effort can still be accomplished. 10-15 years from now that is going to be a monumental task... Just like putting together a collection of the older guns has become today.

It would be nice to see this section of the board have some way of showcasing the modern gun collections...
