How much ammo...

Somewhere between not enough and way too much. The answer's going to depend on who answers, me or my wife.

I won't say what I have. I have been buying 2 to 3 times what I need for over forty years. Lets just say this current shortage of 22 did not catch me off guard.
I am always in the market to buy more, but need any more, I don't think so.

Paranoia Lurking

And most long time members won't be a tellin.
Sounds like a fairly innocent question, have you really taken a head count for how folks feel about that and other questions or are you just taking it upon yourself to speak for me and other members?

I reloaded 6k of 45acp last year during the winter. Summertime is for shooting. Wintertime is for reloading. I have another 5 gallon bucket of 45acp brass to go yet. Once cabin fever sets in I reload.

Remember when a 5k case of 22lr was $200?

No one seriously stock piles ammo for the apocalypse. You aren't going to be driving around in a truck full of food, water & ammo for very long, you'll be ambushed & killed if you dont run out of gas. Unless you are bugging in home & supplying a small militia style army, you can only carry so much. Then there is all the $$$ you spend on ammo you may ever use. Stocking up for a shortge is wise, for an apoc, probably need a better plan.

Seriously???? I consider ammo more valuable than any currency our government is circulating. And no I won't be driving anywhere with it either, because all my plans are based on staying put.

I dont know why you guys are so iffy about tellling people how much and what you have. You guys are too damn paranoid.

I have anout 5 to 7k of various calibers and i think 8 guns if you count my flintlock. Do i expect someone to track me down off this forum and my house to get robbed? Keep dreaming. What i have is far less than many out there.

Bad etiquette, what is with you people? Isnt it bad to ask for picturea of your firearms too then?

I AGREE, Kurac. NEITHER THE QUESTION NOR THE ANSWERS DO ANYTHING TO ENLIGHTEN US. THERE IS NO NEED TO MAKE A TARGET OF YOURSELF, BY STATING THAT YOU ARE SITTING ON A PILE OF AMMO…..
That could be said about so many topics on here.

.. Is in your house?

I figured I would spark what could be an interesting topic, going deeper into your reasoning. Are you a weekend shoot R where you pick up some ammo fire it, and then are done, going home to a full magazine of hollow points for those "just in case situations".OR, are you the doomsday prepper with enough ammo to fight a mini war?

I am curious to understand what others have in their "inventory" and why?

ME: I personally I am rather new to guns, so I keep enough ammo in stock to cover always my next range trip, and to handle if anything comes me way. ;)

First off you asked the question, but did not answer it your self.

In my house I keep, 1 box for each caliber of gun I have. (A gun without ammo is just a club.)
I would say 300-400 rounds.
Im just glad you didn't ask how much ammo I have in the safe in the garage. :)

As much as I hate to admit it, as much as I despise it at times. Violence is a necessary evil.

After Newtown, I started reloading. Ammo was scarce and expensive. I used to pick up a box of ammo every week and just put it in the safe. After Newtown that was t possible. So my boxed ammo is dwindling and I doubt I'll shoot any more of it since I'm reloading now.

I don't shoot that often. Maybe 1000 rounds a year total. But I sure like not being a slave to the stores.

As for .22, it's just getting stupid. I did score at Walmart the other day. They actually got a bunch of .22 in. Still have the three box limit and I was alone, but I got 3 boxes of Federal 375 bulk packs for 18.75 each. 60 bucks for 1000 rounds.

The guy with one firearm and one box of ammo might be a social outcast in some circles.

The guy with more than one firearm and any ammunition might be suspected of being dangerous to the community, perhaps in need of psychiatric intervention for the good of the public.

The guy with a target revolver, a semi-auto defensive pistol, a .22 rifle, a .30 caliber hunting rifle, a shotgun for waterfowling, and a shotgun for upland game is likely to be accused of having an arsenal in his house, regardless of how much ammo he has.

A serious collector who accumulates dozens of classic firearms over several decades, and happens to have a box or two of ammo for each, is likely to be labeled as a psycho prepper.

Any deer rifle with a scope can be categorized as a "sniper rifle". Any firearm not known as highly accurate is categorized as having "no legitimate sporting purpose". Any firearm having any features in common with anything ever used for military purposes (what hasn't?) can easily be reported as an "assault weapon". Any firearm capable of holding more than _____ (fill in the blank) rounds is "unsuitable for private ownership".

One round of ammunition can be enough to get arrested in some states and cities (even one fired cartridge case in some places) unless one holds some sort of license, usually requiring enormous effort and expense to obtain.

All of my guns and ammunition were lost in that boating accident others have mentioned. Terrible day on the water! I was traumatized, still suffering PTSD, afraid to leave the house, clinging to my large-capacity semi-automatic electric carving knife (not just for Thanksgiving dinners anymore) behind barricaded doors while I wait for help from my more enlightened neighbors.

Guys, we need to stop having those forum get-togethers in the middle of some lake!

Semi-auto electric knife?

I agree, I went fishing the other day and caught a beautiful model 586. But had to throw it back because it only had a 4" barrel.:(

Not speaking for anyone here. Just making an observation. Key words are "most" and "long time". You may define as you like.

It boils down to boundaries. I can only say there are certain questions I would never ask of anyone including my closest range buddy.

HOLY ****! Nobody needs a high capacity full auto military grade assault electric knife like that one!

I'm gonna write my congressman. I don't feel safe anymore when anybody can walk into a pawn shop, Lowes or Home Depot and buy one of those. Not to mention tool shows.
I drive past a construction site recently and saw several of those laying around unattended. That's prolly the dreaded 24 volt one that will run on 1 battery for 6 hrs and has hardened cutting blade. Oh the horror...

Thread hijack is now over, back to the normally scheduled thread.
