How much $$ do you pay for a gun transfer from ffl?

Around here $40-$50 is the norm. None of them (to my knowledge) break it down to "X" for the transfer and "Y" for the call; it's just a single fee for the transaction.

I think there's a pawn shop up in Everett that is maybe $30, but his hours of operation don't work out too well for me. The guy I use ($40) I'm within a mile or two of his place at least once a week. Plus he has his FFL in PDF form on his website - I can just email it to a seller easy-peasy.

A friend of mine gets $25 for mine. I would rather drive 40 minutes to his shop then the one 10 miles away, she charges $100.

My guy does it for $20 bucks sometimes. Once in a while he just says this one is free. I don't begrudge him the $20. I can call him on the phone if I am out of town and he will take care of it and hold it for me till I get back. No phone call with a permit in Montana.

My FFL charges me $25 and even though I have a CPL he still makes all the neccesary calls. Plus, he's two miles away from Da Dank.

The one time he neglected to call for another CPL customer he was imformed by the sheriff the customer's CPL had been revoked 1 day prior to the transaction.

Now, he calls for everyone.

My local guy does them for me free of charge. 98% of my retail firearm purchases are from him. I also send a lot of traffic to his store.

There is also a kitchen table FFL in town who is a member of one of the local message boards. He does $10 transfers for other members of the same message boards.

My favorite transfer dealer charges $15-the State of Colorado charges him $7 for the background check when we got mandatory background checks on face to face transactions (it was originally $10 but that dropped awhile ago)-he adds that on. The total is therefore $22. He also just handled an outgoing transfer for me for $30 (UPS wanted $92, FedEx $98 the last time I wanted to send on my own), he's a nice guy-owns the shop along with his wife and I don't mind giving them my business.

my FFL's fee is $30........there are some around here as high as $100.......

Mine charges $15 and will handle personal sales. A lot of FFLs
around these parts act like it's a insult you didn't buy gun off
them. I told one I would if he stocked anything but multi color
plastic pistols. Most charge $25-50.

My current FFL charges $30 but he is only a mile from my home. That sure beats having to drive 20-40 mile round trip to find one that charges less.........

What is with the "phone call"?? In Iowa my CCW permit is all I need to buy any firearm. No further NICS required.

New Jersey
NJ charges $35 to do the transfer and I think it is $15 for the NICS check... Other local FFL's charge the same ....

New York
NYLakesider - .. peoples republic of NY ........most FFLs charge between $35 an $50 ....

California
Fishslayer - I don't think I've seen less than $75 in my area..... they make a 15 minute transaction take a couple of hours...

Above are just a few of the examples. There's a general trend. It's 2-3 times more expensive in New York and California than elsewhere and it would appear significantly less convenient from a time perspective. Here in Kansas the going rate is about $25 total and I can finish a transfer in a few minutes. For me a transfer is $10 as a member of the shooting range I belong to. Florida Guy should consider himself lucky to have inexpensive choices.

Florida Guy - I've been using the same dealer for the last 3-4 years, as he is very nice, and addresses you by name when you walk in the door.... is 10 miles from my house.....His fee for a transfer is $15......
........I found a dealer 5 miles from my house, that charges $9 .........

My guy went to $50-have not bought a gun since. I think $25 is a fair price to pay, what with the record keeping and all. I can't believe someobe is doing it for $9.

I was shocked at the price too, and I asked why he does it so cheap? Maybe not the brightest question to ask, but I was curious.
He told me he wants to get people into the store. It is a pawn shop, so I guess if more people go inside, the more he has a chance to sell something. I will certainly check out the gun cases when I pick up my new arrival at the end of the week.
Basically, he's making $4 for all his bookkeeping. I look forward to meeting him in person.

We have quite a few FFL holders here, some charge as low as $10.00 to create activity on their FFL. One of the true store fronts is $25.00 but will do any transfer for an NRA banquet, local rifle team fund raiser or sporting group fund raiser for free.

I don't pay anything for transfers, but I don't do them that often. I've cultivated personal friendships with my two favorite LGS owners over the last many years. They help me, I help them. At the same time, I don't ask them to do a transfer for something they could just as easily sell or trade to me . . .

Person/Person Transfers have to go through an FFL here in Kalifornistan. Price is set by law at max $35 and FFL are required by law to perform the service. A lot of them make the experience as tough as possible because they don't really make a lot of money.

But like you say... it gets people in the door. One shop sold me a 686 they had on consignment when I did a PPT there and another sold me a $200 light/laser combo, plus they gained a fan who will talk them up on the internet.

...and we DO talk about shops and PPT on the internet in Kalifornistan. ;) With our roster PPT is now the only way to get a lot of handguns. :(

How does an ffl notnmake much money off of $35? It takes less than 30 minutes and just a phone call. Oh yes you have to file too, am I missing something?

Here in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts, I have several choices:

  • My nearest FFL (and a really nice guy) charges $35.00. Very convenient but relatively expensive. :o
  • The most popular FFL for transfers in my area charges $25.00 and it is always a straight, no-BS transaction. I use them the most. :)
  • The local shooting range also charges $25.00 but they tend to give folks a hard time over trivial legal minutia so that you will buy something from them vs. doing a transfer.
  • If I want to travel a bit and do the transfer at night or on weekends, I can get it down to $20.00. So far, it hasn't been worth the trouble, time or gasoline to save an extra $5.00.
