...a pre-lock 686 Plus 2 1/2"? Found one close to me for $900 firm. The gun is in pristine condition with the matching box and all documents. The gentleman states he has put about 300 rounds through it and it has been a safe queen for the last few years. Judging from the cleanliness of the revolver, he has taken good care of her.

I'm sure $900 is too much, but I'd like to hear opinions of how too much it might be. I'm finding it tough to locate much on this model regarding pricing.

Thank you all very much for any help.

If it is a pre-lock version 686-4 it is just dandy.

If it is a lock version, they are available on-line for less....you might try Bud's Guns

good luck

Pre-lock, SA. He says it is a 686-5. I confess much ignorance of Smith revolvers as my interest in them beyond the J frames is just starting to warm.

I'd be interested at $700. Make him an offer.

I've tried to talk him down, Sail, but the rascal won't budge lol. The problem is our area, in my opinion. Excellent condition pre-lock Smiths are rare in these parts, and, sadly, go for more than they probably should.

$900 seems a little steep. $750 sounds better. However, if you want it why let $150 stop you from having your perfect gem?

Chances are very good I'll purchase, Smith. I loathe the locks on new Smith revolvers, but really want to add to my 649 and my soon-to-own NIL 442/642. I really like the 686 Plus, and finding a pre-lock Smith around here with no lock, in a condition above beat-to-dust is a rarity.

Sooo, what is it worth...to YOU?

You hit the nail on the head, RV. The fact that it's pre-lock, local, and in excellent shape with the matching box (yep, I'm a sucker for that) is, for this area, a deal. Not great, not even good, but definitely a deal in an area where too many people think Glocks are the be-all, end-all.

For me it would be a $650.00 gun at best. Too heavy for me to carry, and I don't like shooting .357's out of short barrels because of the muzzle blast. I'm also not a collector or deluded investor.

MSRP on a brand new one is $849. I'd much rather have the one you found.
IMO, this is the answer. Somewhere, someone is offering or will, within the next few years, offer one for a little less or the same price, but you will not know for sure what it is, and you will have to pay shipping and transfer cost.

Unless you like the lock, this is it.

Turned down 1150 for my pre lock 2 1/2 inch 686 3 weeks ago -3. Has a period correct box but not the original. What does that tell you? 7 shooter will bring 1500 plus around here.

I have a 586-5 in 4 inch round butt and I don't think mine is a 900 dollar gun. And I think the blue is much better than the stainless but I don't see too many snubs in the 686 model. I would really have to want it because there are other models with just as much appeal. Best part is you get to decide.
