The annual spring run of shad in Eastern North Carolina rivers. American ("white") Shad and Hickory Shad. A worthless fish otherwise, but fun on light tackle from the riverbank or small boat. Best recipe I ever read for 'em is to fillet and plank 'em fresh, grill them over a campfire while applying lots of butter and pepper, throw the fish away, and eat the board.
