I finally did it, bought 629 Classic Update in post #38

629 Classic

I have been wanting one of these for a long time. I never seem to be able to find one locally as they have always been really hard to come by. At any rate, I was in the LGS today and there in the cabinet was a new 629 Classic, 6.5 inch full lug barrel , 629-6.
Well I didn't have the total amount of cash on me to acquire my long lusted for revolver so I stuck it on layaway for Christmas.
Wow I am so stoked. Can't wait, I am like a little boy again waiting for Santa!
Anyone have an idea when the DRR prefix dates from? My 4th edition of the Standard Catalogue doesn't have it in there.

I bought my 629 Classic about 6 months ago and is one of my favorites!

Well, there's certainly no reason for me to start another thread when this one exists.

This little guy did not follow me home last week, but it did in fact go from Bear Arms, under my care, directly five miles west to Nelson Ford for his nice once-over. I should actually have it home in my safe in a couple weeks.

Yeah, I bought a 629.

Well here is an update. Finally got the 629 Classic out of layaway jail and only got to keep it with me for the ride home. The 'one who must be obeyed" took it and it is now safely wrapped and awaiting it's Christmas release. I did, however, manage a few quick pics in the car. I am having some trouble with this picture posting thing. How do you get the pics to appear full size?

Can someone pint me to the ship on date?

Very nice! I’m between a 629 or a 610 for my next purchase for a little handgun hunting.

Congrats on a nice find.

I just found a nice 5” -3 to go with my 6.5” -3. The classics in all calibers are great guns. Between the two, I prefer the 5”. Just seems to balance better.

I need that FO front sight. Where, height, etc?

@Mod57 That is a fine looking 629 classic! I picked up a used one a few years back. I at first was hesitant as it had the Hillary hole. I went back to the gun shop a few times before finally grabbing it. I do not regret it at all. I am sure you will love yours too.

@rickflst The internal lock did give me pause. I had often said to myself that I would not get one so equipped, but these just don't show up all that often and really I hate the stocks more. I think a set of Culina's Targets may be in order.

I love shooting my 629-6. It handles everything I feed it. One modification I made was to install the X-Frame grip. It fills my hand better than the regular grip and provides a bit more cushion when shooting hot loads.

Lock-hating only leads to needless suffering. Get a set of whatever stocks you prefer and enjoy your new revolver. If its got a decent barrel and a decent trigger, and shoots accurately, you’ll soon forget all about the silly lock. “Nothing more than the buzzing of a fly.” I’d buy one of those myself, without any hesitation, but I just don’t enjoy shooting .44s like I used to.

Give us a shooting report when it gets out of Christmas-jail. Enjoy your new .44 Magnum! :)

Every positive thing said here about the 629 Classic I agree with - except I prefer the 5" length. I tried two different sets of Altamont grips on mine and found that the round-bottoms were actually more comfortable in my hands than the flat-bottom conversions. I also chose to add a Hogue short thumb release for the cylinder and a fiber optic front sight.

Hope you enjoy your new pistol!

…Gotta say I really miss the S&W trade mark on the side plate.

I do too. It’s funny how little things like that really change the gun’s appearance. I guess just another way to save a few cents on an already pretty expensive handgun. Not sure what sense that makes. :(

In any case, it’s still a very handsome revolver. I hope you got a good barrel and a good shooter. Let us know how your trip to the range goes.
