I finally gave in and got a new puppy.

As many of you know, our little 14-year old border collie, Patsy, passed away three months ago. She went with me and the pack string on every pack trip since she was six months old.

After she died, I honestly never thought I'd get another dog, but my wife, our kids, and many of you fine folks here on the Forum gave me good advice...and that was to eventually open my heart up to another canine companion.

I looked at a few puppies during the last couple of months, but nothing clicked. I kept saying to myself that there was just not another dog out there for me.

Well, I was wrong. Saw a litter of border collie puppies a little while ago. I don't think I really picked any one of them...but this one picked me. She was still too young to leave Mama at the time, but we were able to pick her up today.

I think we're going to call her "Suzy," but we'll see how it goes for the next few days.

Thanks, folks, for your counsel and advice. I think this just might work out.:)

In my opinion you made a wise decision. You have given both you and the new pup a chance for a rewarding and long lasting friendship. And this takes nothing away from Patsy, you'll always have her in your heart.

Congratulation to you both. Suzy is a real cutie.

Congrats on the new pup! I've never owned a border collie but my neighbor has two. I swear those dogs are smarter than a lot of people I know. My current pack consists of four dogs. A nearly 15 year old rat terrier, a 9 Y/O rat terrier rescue, a 9 Y/O shaggy mutt rescue, and most recently a 2 Y/O boxer German shepherd mix that was a rescue as well. At 46 I've had a dog of some sort for over 40 years and can't imagine being without at least one. I know it's so hard to lose one and they can never be replaced but a new dog can help to fill that empty space. Here's a photo of my pack lined up for treat time.

I felt so bad or you when you lost Patsy like I feel for all of my forum friends that go trough the cycle of life together with their best friends.

Yep. My screen gets blurry every time.

AND THEN

There's a Suzy that comes along and worms her way into your heart.

Then I think. Then the screen gets blurry again.

It's a good blurry.

It is heart wrenching to lose or have to put down a trusted companion, but only because of the love and joy they have brought you through the years. May Suzy bring you many - many years of that love, joy and companionship. :)

Congratulations on the newest member of your family!

I will advise you to savor each and every puppy moment, even any "mistakes". And I'm guessing that right now, you can still catch her if she's running. But it won't be long before she'll be able to leave you in the dust, gasping for breath with your tongue hanging out.

On November 7, 2010, my dog Beau was seven-weeks-old and enjoying his first full day in his brand new home. Now it's November of 2016, and he's six-years-old. It seems like just last week that I was taking him for his first puppy physical exam! How could this have happened?

Getting older doesn't take as long as it should.
