On Friday afternoon my wife and I drove to Houston to attend a pre-wedding dinner party and the wedding of her niece on Saturday. Earlier I had booked a room at a nice hotel but as things go, we were running late and would miss our check-in time. I called the hotel and the person I spoke with assured me that they would hold the room for us.

It was after 10:30 p.m. when we arrived. We signed in, got our key cards and proceeded to the room.

I opened the door and we walked in. Surprise! There was a couple already in the bed. They both sprang up and the woman reached out and grabbed something off the nightstand, possibly a wine bottle or Coke bottle, and threw it. It happened so fast that I didn’t have time to react and the object struck me solidly in the eye.

I tried to apologize and explained that the hotel clerk had assigned the room and given us the key but all I got in return was a string of expletives and threats. I can understand them feeling that they were in danger so I expected the threats, and maybe even the cursing, but hurling an object is something I didn’t expect. The hotel rooms have an interior lock; I wish these folks had used it.

By the time we reached the lobby my eye was throbbing and I was furious at the hotel. The clerk called the night manager who appeared out of a back room at the same time the man we had walked in on came storming from the elevator. The guy saw my wife and I standing at the front desk and began demanding that we be arrested for breaking into his room.

The manager was able to calm him down. He ushered my wife and I into his office and asked if I needed medical attention. He then went back out to talk to the other guest.

When the manager came back he apologized profusely, then personally escorted us to one of the hotel’s suites. The next morning room service delivered a very nice breakfast, courtesy of the hotel. I hope they were as gracious to the other couple.

The wedding went off perfectly except for my aching eye and a couple of nettlesome relatives wanting to know who won the fight. We had planned to spend Saturday night and Sunday in Galveston but decided to return home after the reception. My wife did the driving because vision in my right eye was slightly blurred. If it doesn’t improve by tomorrow, I will visit the eye doctor.

I thought that computer systems and key cards were supposed to keep things like this from happening but it seems the system is only as good as the person using it. I will be returning to this same hotel in May for the NRA Convention. This time I will knock, loudly, and announce my presence before entering the room.

Glad you are semi-OK. Hope your vision gets better soon.
You are a very understanding person. What a surprise,
for both couples i'm sure. Hope i would have the patience
and ability to handle a similar situation the way you did.
Like Labworm said, Could've been a lot uglier had previous
couple been armed. :eek::eek::eek:

Sorry to laugh, but dang man! I gotta ask, was the couple in the middle of something?

Hopefully the wedding went off better.

Thank God he only had a bottle and not a gun.

There was a case last year north of here where a guy shot his own son to death in a hotel room, mistaking him for an intruder.:(
Glad all you got was a bottle.
Here's hoping your eye heals 100%, and I wouldn't be bashful about demanding the hotel pay for any ensuing treatment your eye requires.

Hope you are OK.
Bad situation all around, through no fault of your own or the other couple.

I probably would have thrown whatever I could have gotten my hands on until I could have accessed a handgun. Think about it . . . . door opens unexpectedly, and someone starts toward you . . . how would you react?

You and your wife, as well as the other couple, are very lucky. You could have gotten hurt much worse, and they could have the burden of knowing they badly hurt an innocent.

The hotel should consider providing free accommodations for you for the NRA Convention.

One of the reasons why I travel with one of these when driving and staying at a hotel/motel. I get the occasional odd look but who cares?

There are couple of nice hotels in Houston that recently had their card key systems hacked. The locks are used worldwide, but the hack started in Houston. From what I've read the break ins were simple burglaries while the occupant was out of the room. I hang out at technology sites too, and the hotels are about two miles from my home. The lock manufacturer is trying to upgrade the systems, but who pays for the fix is a big issue. Do not depend on a card key lock in your hotel room. If a internal hasp lock is there, use it. I hope your stay at the hotel was at no charge and they offered a complementary free weekend in the future. Somehow, I seriously doubt that happened.

I have had that happen more than once. Several years ago I was at a shooting school in Ohio when I opened a room and there was someone already there. I was given another room, but the next morning the manager told me that I was mistaken as there was no one in the room. He even took me down to show me. I still feel that someone somehow broke into the room and spent the night there.

I once checked into a room in the afternoon, used the restroom and left to do some work. Came back in that evening with my stuff to find someone else in the room. Since he had possession, I had to drag everyrthing back downstairs to get a different room. I was not happy.

Yep. Had it happen to me 2months ago. I caught it though because the person already in the room had the windows open and was sitting in a chair next to the window. I just turned around went back to the front desk and said I did not want to sleep with another man. She looked at me strange and after a pregnant pause the light went off. Huge apology new room key. I guess...it happens.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I had booked a suite for my buddies bachelor party. My car load was the first of 12 people to arrive to the room. After settling in and getting the drinks going, I noticed an odd suitcase. It had black and white polka dots. I shouted "who was the pansy that brought a woman's suitcase?".

After a couple of minutes, we knew the hotel double booked the room. I demanded a new room at a lower rate and our long night of shenanigans continued. After reading your story, I immediately thought of my situation. I'm thankful nothing happened. That situation could've played out in so many different ways if we had walked in with another group of ppl in the room.

One final note, before we discovered the suitcase, one of the guys had to take out some waste in the rooms facilities and took a shower. I think he left thr used towel on the ground. As a parting gift, I left a red solo cup filled with an adult beverage on the coffee table in the suites lounge room. How I wish I were a fly on the wall when the other guests walked back into the room.
