On Friday afternoon my wife and I drove to Houston to attend a pre-wedding dinner party and the wedding of her niece on Saturday. Earlier I had booked a room at a nice hotel but as things go, we were running late and would miss our check-in time. I called the hotel and the person I spoke with assured me that they would hold the room for us.
It was after 10:30 p.m. when we arrived. We signed in, got our key cards and proceeded to the room.
I opened the door and we walked in. Surprise! There was a couple already in the bed. They both sprang up and the woman reached out and grabbed something off the nightstand, possibly a wine bottle or Coke bottle, and threw it. It happened so fast that I didn’t have time to react and the object struck me solidly in the eye.
I tried to apologize and explained that the hotel clerk had assigned the room and given us the key but all I got in return was a string of expletives and threats. I can understand them feeling that they were in danger so I expected the threats, and maybe even the cursing, but hurling an object is something I didn’t expect. The hotel rooms have an interior lock; I wish these folks had used it.
By the time we reached the lobby my eye was throbbing and I was furious at the hotel. The clerk called the night manager who appeared out of a back room at the same time the man we had walked in on came storming from the elevator. The guy saw my wife and I standing at the front desk and began demanding that we be arrested for breaking into his room.
The manager was able to calm him down. He ushered my wife and I into his office and asked if I needed medical attention. He then went back out to talk to the other guest.
When the manager came back he apologized profusely, then personally escorted us to one of the hotel’s suites. The next morning room service delivered a very nice breakfast, courtesy of the hotel. I hope they were as gracious to the other couple.
The wedding went off perfectly except for my aching eye and a couple of nettlesome relatives wanting to know who won the fight. We had planned to spend Saturday night and Sunday in Galveston but decided to return home after the reception. My wife did the driving because vision in my right eye was slightly blurred. If it doesn’t improve by tomorrow, I will visit the eye doctor.
I thought that computer systems and key cards were supposed to keep things like this from happening but it seems the system is only as good as the person using it. I will be returning to this same hotel in May for the NRA Convention. This time I will knock, loudly, and announce my presence before entering the room.
