I hate Squirrels

Mom always had 5 or 6 of the little bugger in the freezer.

I just have a problem visualizing opening the freezer and seeing dead squirrels inside.

My cat used to kill a lot of squirrels. At least once a week the driveway would look like a mass murder scene. A head over here, a leg over there, a kidney on the steps...body parts were strewn all over. He even killed a good sized opossum once. We don't get many squirrels where we live now despite backing up to open space and a nice sized creek. The coyotes, bobcats, hawks, and owls keep them at bay.

We feed the birds. I have made 2 feeders out of hollow logs that the squirrels destroyed. I don't like the store bought feeder cause they are all too small and you have to fill them every day. I just made another one out of a length of 8" stove pipe. Last year I shot 40 squirrels and 10 so far this year. I don't want to kill them all, just get them down to manageable numbers. I do enjoy watching them.

I love squirrels. I used to live up on the Rapadan River, and would watch them every morning out the kitchen window. Then a lot of times, I'd grad a 22 rifle and go out and hunt for a couple of hours. I had an imaginary line....inside that line was sanctuary. They were safe. Outside that line...it was game on.

I'd rather hunt squirrels than deer now. A lot of times I just practice "catch and release." I'd get them in my scope, and think..."BANG...gotcha"....and lower the rifle. No need to clean them that way.

Now I've moved "back to town" and I don't see squirrels anymore. I kinda miss them.

e3mrk: I think I have a solution to your Squirrel situation But first I have some questions.
1. Do you own a shotgun?
2. is their squirrel hunting season where you live.

If the answer to these questions are yes then here is what I suggest you do first find out when the squirrel hunting season is, next obtain hunting permit, next take shotgun and shotgun ammo go into the woods and hunt as many squirrels as the permit will allow.

I like squirrels, and am constantly amused at some of their antics.

One likes to come up on the back porch and drink out of Annie and Beau's water bucket.

Hopefully Annie & Beau learn how tasty they are. My yard
dogs crunch em down, head to tail, as tasty treats! :D

I spend about a hour carving this Pumpkin and cleaning up the mess,I set it outside and I dont think it was five minutes before the tree rats destroyed it.Now it looks like a toothless old man that threw up on My porch.
I hate Squirrels!.

I'd use .22 CB cap long cartridges in my Ruger 10-22; low noise and more than enough power.

Squirrel hunting is one of my favorite ways to spend a morning. Head out to the woods with my camping stool and sit down and relax.

I got a little pay back from one a few years ago. I picked it up after shooting it and was attempting to stuff it into my game vest. It decided with it's last gasp to chomp down on my finger. To say I was surprised was an understatement. The teeth those buggers have are extremely sharp along with a set of strong jaw's. I swear the bite went right down to the bone. I now make sure they are dead before I pick them up!

Here in the suburbs, I use a Havahart brand box trap to relocate excess squirrels to a golf course area. As bait, they can't resist a little peanut butter on a cracker or piece of bread.

One day last spring, I was making the morning coffee, just turned
on the pot and was firing up the toaster. Bam, I thought someone
touched off a 12guage in the hollow behind my house. Then I
realized the power was out. Took my "deck Gun" out and looked
at transformer down in hollow. Mr. Squirrel got between the
primaries and blew the power. Called REA and they came and
fished the squirrel out, he looked like he was freeze dried, a little
over done for my taste. We hunt them up here, fox & greys, we
have them in yard all the time raiding the bird feeders. Never
shoot the yard squirrels. Here squirrel hunting is traditional. I
have herd some places in the US they don't eat squirrel, that's
Ok, more for us Hill Billies.
