OK,, Mystery SOLVED!!

It was deer,, dragging their hooves,,

I have never noticed, I guess the deer do not lift their hooves and "TROT" like Budweiser Clydesdale's,,,

Also, this was an area that had 3 inches of solid ice, topped with 2-3 inches of snow.

Possibly the deer were being VERY careful walking?? They were walking on solid ice,,,

I will bet it was 4 to 6 kids crossing your lawn shuffling their feet instead of taking steps. I might be old, but there are things I still remember about being a kid in the winter.
