The department I'm still temporarily disabled from only issued Level IIA vests. When I go back, I'll foot the bill for a IIIA. They may not be as comfortable, but who cares.

I always wore 2 trauma plates, too. The one hard plate that came with the vest (rated for .223 and 7.62x39 AP rounds), but I worried about ricochet. A Philly cop was killed when a pistol round fired from an upward angle ricocheted off his hard trauma plate, into his head. So, I bought a Level IIA soft trauma plate and put it in front of the hard plate. Overcautious? Maybe. But I'll take the extra weight of a good vest any day over comfort.
