I have a four year old RCBS Chargemaster 1500. Very good peice of equipment, until it died last week. Just went totaly blank, like I turned it off. Power supply is OK. I use it for rifle ammo, still use the old Uniflow for pistol stuff. So I call RCBS and they said mail it to us with $45.00 and we will either fix it or send you a new one, in either case you get a new one year warrenty. He suggested UPS.

So off I go the 50 miles to the UPS store. The lady asked what is it and I told her a powder scale. She said she could not ship it because it had gun powder in it and to take it to the main UPS hub which BTW does not open until 3:00 pm (it's now 9:45 in the morning. I told her there was no gunpowder in it, it was used to measure it, not store it. She gets out her book and opens it to a paragraph about "Firearms and Amunition" and shoves it in my face. I read it and nothing applied but that didn't mattter to her. This thing had touched gun powder and was evil.

So wondering what to do with five hours in Nampa Idaho I dropped by the U.S. Post office. She asked me the standard question about fragile, dangerous etc. to which I said no. Cost me $12.75 with $350.00 of insurance.

I'm glad I don't have to ship guns with those clowns.

The Post Office is getting their <blank> together. I like them. Way easier to deal with than the Brown Shirts.

I shipped a handgun intrastate via UPS last year. The transfer was legal, of course, and I printed out UPS's rules and regs, as well as the BATFE guidelines.

I had to go through an in-house UPS supervisor, as well as one at their HQ, before I got their OK. Sometimes you have to keep plugging away.

The lady asked what is it and I told her a powder scale.
Your mistake.
Never tell them more than they need to know.

"What is it?"
'A scale'

What kind?
Small one.

What do you weigh with it?
Anything that fits on it.

I took a old computer to the ups "STORE" to send it to my son in NC. stood in line with it for 15 minutes (heavy). when its finally my turn, the woman behind the counter waits until I set it on the counter to ask me "wheres the box"??? during all the time she had, waiting for credit cards to run, she could have mentioned I'd need a box
"dont you sell them here ?? its a "store"?
"no. take it downtown to a authorized dealer and we'll pick it up there after they box it up."
drive downtown to find out that to box and ship would cost $150.00. emailed the boy and said it wasnt coming.

Deep down I think we all like to tell them something is "gun related" to get a reaction, but it isn't worth it as you can see....like Lee said...less is more.

Tell them it's a digital scale used to weigh grains.

Then they'll think you're a dope dealer and turn you in to the feds
Bring it in already boxed. Tell them it's a dopler measurement device for weather forcasting and you are getting it calibrated for hurricane season. Or tell her it's a defective compass that you are sending back for a replacement. Be creative ;)

The problem was that I packed it in its original box.

What got me was the way she reacted. She backed up and put her hands up like it was a rattlesnake. When she got over that she wiped some household dust off of it and tried to convince me that was gunpowder. Too bad I wasn't carrying.

I have been told that the "authorties" do concern them selves with lab scales. But you can walk into any kitchen store and buy a scale accurate to .01 (maybe .001) of a gram no questions asked.

I just want my Chargemaster back.

"Hood Ornament" covers everything. Just about anything smaller than a microwave oven could indeed be mounted on a hood.

Barrel...hood ornament.

Scope...hood ornament.

Powder scale...hood ornament.

Get the picture? :)

I went to the local UPS store to mail a set of custom trap grade wood for a Remington 870 to my son.

I wanted them to package it so their insurance would cover it. I thought they were going to call the cops as "it's illegal for me to mail anything for a gun".

Tried to explain it's nothing more than machined walnut...........but no way.

Went to the Post Office, bought the packaging and mailed it with no problems.

Keep in mind that most all The UPS Stores are franchise, not company operated. They operate more like a shipping agent. Some rules are different for The UPS Store franchise compared to a UPS center, especially concerning firearms. As well, franchise operators can decide they aren't going to ship certain things simply because they don't want the liability (real or perceived). It's their business, not UPS'.

No reason to raise an unnecessary red flag with a counter clerk.... much less call them idiots.

Caj, a digital scale used to weigh grains is for counting calories for a fat horse. She would have accepted it if she thought it was for making illicit drugs, but it would have disappeared before it got to it's destination.

My gun club ordered a shotgun from Remington thru a dealer. It was for our 50th Anniversary. Remington shipped it Adult Signature Required. Dealed called me a few weeks later, he came home from work and a big green box with REMINGTON printed on it, was on a snowmobile in his yard. You guessed it, driver signed card and left the shotgun on the snowmobile. We called UPS to complain. I spoke with a rep, she kept repeating, "If you have the package and it's contents are not damaged, what is your complaint? Not having any, I said "Have a nice day", and hung up.

Awhile back I shipped a Mod 19 to a facility in Arkansas to have plated. I shipped by UPS, and had disassembled it and kept out all the parts I did not want plated. When the gal at UPS asked me what it was. I was honest and said a Handgun, but all disassembled. She asked if all the parts were there and could it be make back into a usable gun, I said no. She shipped for me at regular rate instead of the higher overnight rate as it wasn't a gun. I didn't argue.
