I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT PEOPLE WOULD RUSH OUT TO BUY A .500 MAGNUM, THE WAY THEY SOUGHT OUT A M29 CLONE OF CLINT'S REVOLVER......
THE .500 IS JUST TOO MUCH GUN TO BE USEFUL TO THE AVERAGE SHOOTER, WHEREAS THE M29 IS VERY VERSATILE.......
In general, I agree even though I've been shooting the 500s for 15 yrs now. Useful??? In terms of what it was designed for, capably and authoritatively taking down anything that walks on earth, yes few use them for that.
But they're simply fun if you reload and are extremely accurate, accurate to the extent that 99.9% of those who shoot them can't exploit their accuracy.
Edited to remove an unfortunate remark regarding the poster's use of caps. I was informed of the reason for the use of all caps and wouldn't have commented had I known. My bad, my apologies. Don
The power level of the .44 magnum was impressive in that day , and seeing cop carry one was unheard of.
In a recent interview with Clint Eastwood, he said that had the Springfield Armory Professional (FBI Gun) .45 ACP been available, Dirty Harry woulda used it.
Recent negotiations about resurrecting the Dirty Harry series, venture capitalists have conditioned funding upon Dirty Harry sporting an FBI Gun.
I made that up, just like fake news, but it should be true ;-)
The model 29 being so heavy, I often wondered how he could lug that around all day. Yes, I know he had a shoulder holster, but still!
Laughing but i'll second that!He'd be carrying a S&W 500 with 8 3/8 inch barrel.
They'd have to change the script to read
I know what you're thinking: "Did he fire five shots or only four?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .500 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?
I'm just praying that Hollyweird doesn't try to remake Dirty Harry.
I'm thinking Harry might want to update his "Duty Gun" to an AMT .44 Automag - still keeping the shoulder rig though. Love the vent rib.

I had an uncle that carried a 629 as his duty weapon as a town cop. He was kind of the laughing stock among the other cops and even among our family though. Of course his attitude had a large part to do with it as well.
