If you woke up in a time before firearms or in some world like Diablo or Skyrim what weapon are you grabbing off the weapon rack or from your local blacksmith? I'm torn between a battleaxe, a mace, and a longsword.
If you were in the times before guns what is your weapon of choice?

I went with a sword and shield. The sword would be a Roman Gladius. The ancient Romans perfected its use and it was a state-of-the-art deadly weapon.

I chose crossbow(built in silencer) also good for hunting deer,antelope etc

The Chinese invented a repeating crossbow. Also, they introduced the idea of mass production of crossbows with completely interchangeable parts.

I have a feeling he shan't ever enter the house on to which he has resided in the past.
With the Wife's biscuits, we find these good for 20 yards or so.

Don't know the name of it but i'd want one of those ax/club things they fought with in The Last of the Mohicans. If you can't win a fight with one of those you should hide behind a tree until somebody invents a gun.

The question is totally insufficient! Are you looking at a weapon for personal defense, law enforcement use,hunting or war? Just like for firearms the answer depends on many factors, principally being intended use. In this case geography is a factor too. Example: Someone in Northern or Western Europe would not even have a Japanese Katana available as a choice. And would the military use be infantry, mounted use?
"Before guns" encompasses a lot of time, several millennia! Or are you just asking for the 100 years or so immediately before invention of gunpowder and the hand cannon?

Throwing axe more for my choice of locale and proficiency. We threw them as kids at our rod & gun club and living in the unpopulated Adirondacks it would double as a firewood tool.

My thought exactly, and I made the same choice because it is the closest to what I would choose.
A short (rather than long) sword - something about the length of a machete, but double-edged and a little heavier. A good non-slip grip with a large pommel (for pummeling
) and enough of a cross/hand guard to keep your hand from sliding forward onto the blade - and to block an opposing blade from reaching your hand.The shield would be a buckler type - no more than 18"-20" diameter or so. Large enough to block swings and stabs from an opponent, but small enough to be easy to maneuver or even swung as a weapon itself.
A pretty versatile combination.
