I'm In CA. -What Happens If I Need To Warranty My M&P9? Not on Approved list anymore?

Talk about over worrying a non-existent problem!

If S&W cannot provide you with a CURRENT on-Roster gun they'll offer you the most closely associated ON-Roster gun...it's that simple.

This coming from a non-Californian obviously.

FYI S&W has pulled out of CA 100% on handgun sales ... as of I think August something the FS is one of the last current on roster guns that will fall off the list this month.

SO your "They'll offer me a closely associated On-Roster gun" means nothing cause There Is NO MORE "ON-ROSTER" Handguns In CA. from S&W!

So ... Ya .... Not That Simple.

That's my issue I bought a gun with a warranty and really based on CA. laws it seems as if my warranty from S&W is basically void due to this horrible states laws.

Still have yet to call S&W but I will update with they say after I do as I know many CA. guys who have purchased a S&W gun as of late like me (I have bought two, an M&P9 CORE and and M&P15 AR-15) would like to know how this is gonna work for the handgun warranty (the AR is still good to so I'm okay there) recently purchased and how they will warranty with them pulling out CA.

These statements are not only flat out wrong on their face but in the conclusions you draw.

S&W will continue to offer the Shield in both 9mm and .40 cal as well as the SD9/40 for the foreseeable future unless something else drives a product change or there are further changes in the law. They have made this quite public.

The microstamping requirement does NOT apply to revolvers. S&W recently renewed quite a few.

Yes you are correct I did forget about the Shields.

And maybe saying handguns obviously lumped all of em together ... I was speaking more about non-revolver handguns.

But as far as ANY regular semi-auto striker fired pistol minus the shield are gone! There is nothing in the closely associated category that is available now in CA like a CORE.

Anyway this thread has got a but much.
Once I found out the exact details on all of this I will post what I find, I just created this to see if anyway knew but obviously not a single person has a clue including myself so I will look into further myself. Thanks

My apologies if I came on strong. You correct that except for the CA Shield, all M&Ps will go off roster soon. With SSE ending 1/1/2015, any non-roster pistols will be very tough to come by.

Of course, this is only CA so most are unaffected (aka, could care less).

Using the XD-S recall as an example... The XD-S (without a single-shot exemption mod) is not on the list, but those in CA that owned a (converted back to 'regular') XD-S were able to participate in their recall with no issue. I'm guessing that Anyone who legally owns a Shield would be able to obtain Warranty work done without issue as well.
Options would most likely be to box it up (would recommend a plain FedEx/UPS box of the appropriate size) and ship it back yourself, or (what I do)... Take it to your FFL/LGS and let THEM ship it for you (and have it shipped back to them for you to pick up).

Ya know... You COULD just ask your local FFL. ;)

First step will be using an instate Warrenty Station instead of automatically shipping back to S&W . A mfg *could* afix the old s/n to a new frame upon destroying defective frame, but it is not the current practice of S&W , nor most mfg. I know this is a S&W discussion board , but Ruger is already mention above. Ruger is notorous among Ruger owners/ fans/ collector for declaring a gun unrepairable, and offering a check/ credit towrds a current gun. While refusing to return the origional gun. Thought among Ruger owners is that if one NOS part is out of stock , they will total the gun. All this is offered to show the advantages of sending your gun for service to a skilled independent gunsmith in your jurisdiction. Yeah , you have to pay his fees , but you have more control over the destiny of your gun.

And not to be *that guy* , but the basic bottom line is you need to examine your basic priorities in life : Balance love of climate , family responsabilities , or being single digit years away from a good pension vs living in America.

So I got a new M&P9 Pro CORE and I thought of something after reading a thread tonight.

What happens if something needs repaired on my gun and I have to send it to S&W for warranty service or replacement etc.?

Since it's no longer on the CA. Approved Roster List anymore will there be any issues?

Maybe if it can be repaired etc. it may not be an issue but what if say the lower needs replaced due to major crack etc. and it;s a new serial# (not sure if that is how this works or not) but the gun is no longer on the approved list what happens then?

I know I can still get this gun using SSE ... But SSE bill has been signed and that will be illegal come Jan.1st 14' so there is no way to do that if this would happen say after next year.

Just trying to get an idea of how that all works and how S&W warranties a gun that's in CA when it;s no longer on the list and SSE is gone?

Thanks so much and I look forward to your replies! :)

I'd move . . .

to all those that say just move

It isn't as easy as that. Yeah this state is a mess and I don't see it getting any better in the foreseeable future, but there are reasons that I will not bother debating about that keep me here.

I am subscribing as I would like to know if a "repair" will be allowed back in the state if it's no longer approved for sale. A reference to a legal code will suffice.

I'm working on it ... Trying to gather full facts before I reply.

I paid good damn money for this gun WITH a warranty ... I want to make sure I'm covered so I'll get to the bottom of it and reply with my findings and where I got the info from.

You bought it while it WAS on the list. It's 'Grandfathered' in.
While I can't quote you page and paragraph, I can point you to the Calguns website/forum who CAN quote you the facts.

Wrong! Until a change is made to a gun It will be re- submitted before it falls off of the list. Only when a change is made is a gun required to include micro stamping.

The L.A.S.O. has standardized on the 9mm M&P.

Sorry, but what Saudade said is correct. S&W has generated a policy letter saying that they will not renew any of their pistol certificates on the Safe Handgun list. The only exceptions are the CA Shield and the SVDE. So, even though S&W could resubmit the M&P, they won't.

Also, it's true that the LA Sheriff has gone over to the M&P 9mm. Unfortunately for the rest of us, it has no bearing on gun availability. Law Enforcement is exempt from following the micro-stamp requirement or the Safe Handgun list. S&W will still sell the M&P line to the law enforcement community.

Smith & Wesson has what they call a summer shut-down from July 28th to August 8th (for what who the hell knows)

So no one is available to help.

I'll try next week.

I am not sure the gun, if a new serial#, has to go thru a FFL. I had a Kahr P380 go to them, they sent it back to me directly with a new frame and serial#. Of course it was on roster, but does the manufactured care, as long as you own the gun legally? I recently sent an early release Kel-Tec back to them, they replaced everything but the frame, sent it back to me directly, it is off roster also.
