Input on relocating - free America!

We're nearing the finalizing stage of moving, and it's halfway south for us. I'd prefer the SC coast, around Murrels Inlet, but my wife prefers the Raleigh area.
I'm a summer person, the only time I want to see snow is when my wife watches her annual "It's a wonderful life". :) Not interested in land either, been there done that, don't need the upkeep and hassle. Too old for that ****. 1/4 acre, or less, is fine with me. Giving away my mower and snow thrower.
Being close to medical facilities is most important as I get older. I'm in excellent health, as is my wife, but being out in the boonies without a excellent doc or hospital nearby, is not in our future. Raleigh/Durham has Duke Medical and plenty of healthcare options.
Taxes are a pittance in NC compared to what I pay in NY.
The thing I'm going to miss is the food, there's non better anywhere, imo.
Not interested in living anywhere near an invasion force, seen enough of that as well.
It's great that we live in a country with so many choices.

Arizona is nice! Just be sure and get some elevation.
It's gets hot down there on the flat.
I also like Payson, Show Low and all around there.

Good choices but job opportunities are pretty limited. If I ever retire (and I mean REALLY retire) and decide to stay in Arizona, I'd look at Strawberry, just north of Payson (although water may be an issue in the long run). There is a gun club just south of Payson.

I was also tempted to suggest the Prescott area, but it's gotten pretty crowded over the years.

I like Prescott! Cottonwood is also a very nice town that you don't usually hear that much about. At least I don't.
It's near but not that close to Sedona, which is IMO way over the top.

Any particular part of TX? The Gulf Coast has hurricanes, the panhandle seems to be desert, according to bhayles Austin is out, R. G Amos says that Houston is out, and Dallas has the dog-pukin' Cowboys. I know it is a big state but what does that leave?

San Antonio Fool! You don't have any of the junk mentioned above. 80 degrees and sunny all week so far.

As already mentioned San Antonio. Enjoyed my time there though it was many years ago. Hill country nearby for hunting and touring. Texas coast not that far away, beaches fishing, and great sea food. Lots of medical facilities, built many of them! Nearby lakes, Medina, Canyon, which has great stream trout fishing below the dam. New Braunfuls nearby. San Antonio itself has many events and attractions. My experience was, nice people. Some nice gun shops and several nice shooting ranges were around during my time. Didn't enjoy my time in the DFW area due to traffic issues mainly. Only in Houston for short periods, but have negative rememberences of traffic and humidity.
Many places, many options in Texas.

SC is a gun friendly state...

I live in the Charleston Tri-County area (Berkeley Co), but I've always liked the upstate area nearer to the mountains. We do have an active gun club here (Summerville area) that I can't afford to join. Today I saw a truck emblazoned with "SC concealed weapons permit" and something about Utah (which is a state with reciprocal gun laws). I don't know what it meant, but they weren't afraid to advertise.

3) area friendly to gun owners/ new residents ( I have heard also the Deep South often resents Yankee carpetbaggers)
Open to any and all suggestions
As a military retiree being near a military post to take advantage of some of the resources available would be nice but not required

In all seriousness, it's not Yankee carpetbaggers we resent. It's Yankee carpetbaggers whose favorite expression is "We didn't do it that way in......"(insert Boston, New York City, New Jersey, etc.). Someone mentioned North Georgia which is nice and not near as humid as when you get down to Atlanta. There is Dobbins Air Force Base on the north side of town although I'm not sure if they have a commissary or not. Quite a few large health centers in the Atlanta area including Emory University and the CDC but I will tell you the common traffic report coming south into Atlanta at rush hour is "all parking spots on I-75 and I-85 are taken but thank you for playing anyway." I don't know about gun clubs up there and the Griffin Gun Club would be quite a haul.

All that being said, if I were moving anywhere it would be to the hill country in Texas.

Las Vegas, Nevada baby!

1. Gun friendly.
2. No state income tax.
3. Mild winters.
4. Hot summers.
5. Lots of affordable housing.
6. World class entertainment on the strip.
7. Nellis AFB has commissary and exchange.
8. World class shooting park on north end of valley. Archery,
Skeet/Trap. Pistol and rifle. They do have tournaments.
9. Lots of hospitals and clinics to find work.
10. Gun stores all over the place.
11. Walmart supercenters all over the place.
12. No tax on unprepared food and medicine.
13. Boulder City also has a gun club.
14. Public school system does suck, though. :D

Carson City, Nevada. Not as hot in the summer as Las Vegas, but a little colder in the winter. Close to Lake Tahoe.

Since no mention of NFA , your field is pretty wide open. Comes to your preferences of how close to eith a large metropolitan area , or a more medium sized city.

Lots of sugguestions for TX , AZ , and NV - just keep in mind Gulf Coast humidity and low altitude desert heat respectivly.

North Ga has been mentioned, and it's nice. Sort of along that theme East Tenn and Piedmont NC . Not sure about medical employment in E.TN , but in the Research Triangle area of NC there are at least as many displaced Yankees as native Caroliaians . Not that there would be much of an issue anywhere as long as you aren't obnoxious on purpose to your new neighbors.

Please stay away from Texas, especially the DFW area. There's too many of you folks moving here, 170,000 per year to the metroplex and 1,000 per day to Texas in general. It seems every other license plate is PA, IL, MA, NY, MI, etc. clogging up the highways and sucking up the resources.

Texas, Tennessee, Georgia mtns and most any other place south of the Mason Dixon line would be easy enough for me to call home but there is no place I'd rather live than good ol southern Indiana. I live across the river from Louisville Ky, which is the gun show epicenter of the USA. Pretty fair basketball, fast women and pretty horses, too.

A couple years ago I'd have said come to Colorado. Gorgeous views, depending on where (I live in south-central), not a lot of snow, mild summers, colder winters, but only in snaps. Cheap housing, tons of land available.

Then came the current political climate, so I can no longer in good faith recommend it, although I love it here and as a sixgun shooter, the magazine capacities don't affect my shooting. Don't confuse that with not caring about the current infringement on my 2nd amendment, but it doesn't really affect my shooting.

When the politics swing back the other way hopefully soon, it'll be a great place again.

I don't think that Oklahoma has been mentioned, & I know it wasn't one of the choices given by the OP. I'm back in Texas now but for the past twenty or so years I lived in Oklahoma, first in Tulsa, than in Oklahoma City. I liked both, but prefer Tulsa. It has more of a small town feel than Oklahoma City. One thing I sure miss about Oklahoma is the manner in which people drive! Driving is just a lot more aggressive & hostile in Texas. I get cut off or tailgated every time I go anywhere. I have this theory that the entire state of Texas is a NASCAR training camp, & people are hoping to be discovered. I'm not joking here! One thing I don't miss about Oklahoma is having to worry about tornadoes quite so much.:D

I still love Texas, but if I had to move it would be back to Oklahoma.

San Antonio and the surrounding smaller towns are good locales. Seguin, New Braunfels, San Marcos. The Hill Country is nice too. Fredricksbug, Kerrville.

Plano, Tx is supposed to be the most gun friendly town in the USA.

Bumping this back to the top- thanks so much for your input so far. Not only do I want a red state but also one that has very little chance of turning blue in the future.
As far as the job comments - my wife and I average 100 plus calls and emails recruiting us nationwide so I doubt this will be a factor.
We will be visiting Arizona next month. We were at fort hood for a while so Texas hill country is somewhat familiar to us.
