We’re staying at my MIL’s house over the holidays, and she asked if I wanted a cup of coffee. Little did I know that the coffee was instant. And to boot the jar looked to be 30 years old. Does anybody really like this stuff? Hoo boy that stuff is rough! I’ve drank a lot of bad coffee but the only things it has in common with coffee was it was brown and liquid.

In recent years I have been occasionally, when driven to a cup of instant due to the lack of fresh brewed, pleasantly surprised at how much better instant tastes than it did, say, 40 years ago.... Fresh brewed is definitely the way to go, but in a pinch....

Every couple of weeks I visit an old neighbor friend where I used to live. He looks forward to my visits. He drinks instant coffee. First thing in the door, "cup of coffee?", he says. "Sure, only if you're having one", I say. When he asks if I want a 2nd cup, I draw the line and politely decline. Can only take so much, ugh yuck. He's gonna be 91 soon, and even though the coffee is awful, the company is great, and will someday be missed.

I was cutting trees for a older lady a professor PhD at a local college. She offered me coffee. First the cup was stained so bad it was never washed. It was instant coffee. She went to answer the phone I dumped it on the sink. I think the cup was so badly stained if you poured in plain water it would of made tea. Lol

The last time I tasted instant coffee it was awful. I don't even remember what brand it was it was so many decades ago. I don't expect I'll be trying it anytime soon neither. I'm glad to know it's gotten better though just in case it ever turns out that is all I can get.

I've tried a number of instant coffees, and never could find one that I liked. Folger's Crystals came the closest to tolerable. I love my coffee...I brew a pot every morning, and I use Community Coffee Hotel Blend. I've rarely found coffee I like in any restaurant, either...most seem too strong and don't taste good.

My wife wanted a Keurig so I got her one...tried one of the K-Cups, and it was awful...my wife thought so too. Making hot chocolate in it is great. I am going to give the grounds filter a try in it, to see if I could use my own coffee to make a decent cup when I want just one.

Instant and brewed coffee are two different beverages.

You can come to like both if you don’t compare them to one another.

Compare instant coffees with instant coffee and brewed coffee with brewed coffee.

Given a choice, I’ll take brewed coffee.

While we are on the subject of coffee I would be remiss if I didn't tell y'all about the system my daughter and her hubby have. It is made by Jura. I think I over heard her to say it cost $3K? I'm not sure there is any such thing as a coffee maker that is worth that much but if there is then this would have to be it.

On the left side is the refrigerated milk container/dispenser. The primary machine grinds the beans and pops up a menu on the screen where you may choose from: Cappuccino, Late Machiato, cream, Espresso, coffee or hot water. You may control the strength of the coffee and the amount to brew. The milk system rinses after each use.

It prompts you when you need to fill the water, milk or beans and when the grounds and rinse tray needs dumping. To the right side in a heated compartment that will warm up 3 cups at a time.

It is absolutely DEEEEE-LISH!!!

I found many of the Keurig K Cups to be too strong. Try a lighter roast. I liked their Donut House blend but I think they may have changed it.

K-Cups can be good (acceptable) depending on what brand of brew you are using. That being said, I have retired my Keurig and switched entirely to fresh ground beans in a french press.
My wife, the queen of instant gratification, has also switched and endures the 'wait', admitting that it is worth it.
Trying to get a real good cup of coffee is not easy anymore. I will say Dunkin Donuts still is king of on the road brew....

Here is how I start my day, and often how I end it.....

I grind fresh roasted single origin beans, usually Costa Rica,Panama,Guatemala or Columbia every morning.

I only drink coffee in the morning right after it's brewed.

I just can't drink instant coffee or eat quick oats.

I have had one instant coffee that is good enough to drink, and that I like as much as any K-cup coffee I've had. I don't shop for it, so I don't know if it exists in the USA, but it's the only coffee most Swiss households I've been in serve. Nescafé Gold De Luxe.

At home we have a cheaper version of the Jura Super-automatic machine described by Walkin' Jack, made by Saeco. It still needs the right beans and roast, a "Full-City Blend".

I've never tried roasting and/or grinding beans...I guess I have plebeian tastes, but commercially ground coffee suits me. I used to drink Maxwell House, but on a whim tried Community Coffee Hotel Blend, and loved it.

I never drank coffee at home growing up...learned to drink coffee in the Navy. Later on in life, I'd go to visit my folks, and they always wanted to fix coffee when I'd visit. They put in 8 heaping scoops of coffee to make 8 cups of coffee...the spoon would stand up in it without touching the sides of the cup. It was awful.
