Interesting questin: How many rounds?

In that case, I need to carry a SEAL team!

Really, that's what you'd need to feel safe?

I live on the edge of the Pacific. We have the threat of tsunami, and the experts say "when" and not "if". Do I live in fear of that? No. I do have a plan, however, should that day come in my lifetime. A plan for home, and a plan if I'm somewhere else. It's no different than my outlook about self defense.

I've followed this thread with some amusement. Everyone has an opinion. Bottom line, carry what you think you need to, and don't worry about what someone else thinks.

I feel bad for people who live in fear.

While in the Marines in the late 60's I was involved in a few firefights. I don't ever recall wishing that I had LESS ammo. But.......

I carry a 1911 now. If 8 rounds in the gun & a spare mag isn't enough ammo to get me out of whatever trouble I've gotten into, then I don't need a gun with more capacity, I need close air support.

Obviously, the sarcasm was lost on you.:(

Being serious for the moment. Mrs. Chillock says I need to. Damn!

This is a debate that the Mrs. and I have from time to time. She carries a small auto, at times she feels one mag is not enough. She now carries an extra sometimes two.

As for me, in MY experience (non- LEO) you should carry what you feel comfortable with.

I was taught, point shoot, once and follow through with a second. A typical "double tap". That is the way I shoot. Period. Bang, Bang. Next target. In the few times I have had to for self defense, never have I been asked why 2 shots? Why 4 shots etc. etc. I have never been asked why a BUG. Nor have I been accuse of "looking for a fight" by an attorney or anyone.

When I became of age and started to carry, I always carried one extra mag, no matter what the count of rounds. When I have had to defend myself, it had nothing to do with being in a "bad area I shouldn't have been".

Have I ever had to reload/change mags? Yes, once. Was it enough? NO. Thank goodness LE showed up as I ran empty. The off duty LEO, had a 38 special. He was out long before me. Normal situation? NO.

Several people quoted stats. Several people said one in a million. Hmmmm.... guess what? One in a million you'd have to reload. I did. One in a million you'd have to use that many rounds. I did. Both during the same situation. It happens... Odds are low, but it happens.

Under normal circumstances maybe 5 rounds is enough. I don't believe it. Plus I think this is subjective depending on to many variables such as where you live, where you work, where you have to travel to do everyday living, time of day/night, full moon/quarter moon, time of month/term of pregnancy, alignment of the stars..... Need I go on?

Obviously, you try to stay away from bad elements. But sometimes, all the weirdness comes together at the same time.

Carry what you are comfortable with, make, model, size, caliber of gun. Carry what you are comfortable with, 5 rnds, 10 rnds, 17 rnds, 2 backup mags, 4 backup mags and a trunk full of bulk ammo. Whatever, whenever. Just be legal and smart about it all.

And preferably have seal team six in standby, hovering above in a black helo. (Sorry Perfect One, back is sore today, can't carry my share of the seal team).

If you're not an LEO, have had to defend yourself with a firearm "a few times", and it had nothing to do with being in a "bad area", Lady Luck must not like you worth a damn. Especially if firing two full magazines wasn't enough in one case.

Your neighborhood sounds pretty scary to me.

Here's one:
Take a situation like the Aurora movie theatre. My friend (a county sheriff) is allowed to carry in theatres...I am not. He and his wife, along with my wife and I frequently attend movies together. If a situation breaks out he could arm me with his backup gun.

I don't think so; Colorado law specifically protects the right of a property owner to prohibit firearms on his property. LEOSA or not I think that applies to off duty police who are acting in no official capacity as well

He said a situation "like" the Aurora one. I don't think he lives in CO.

Protectedone,
I disagree. If I'm in a situation like Aurora, I'm likely going to be too busy trying to get clear or take out the bad guy to hand over a gun. I guess it could work, but I think it would require some advanced planning. Have you and your friend ever discussed it?

What really cracks me up is the people that are willing to and do carry first aid items on their person or in their trunk.

"No, No, I don't need more ammo or guns but I need a first aid kit in case I get shot"

Yes, I know people like this. Backwards thinking IMO.

My car came with a first aid kit - standard equipment.
So I never had to buy one.:)

Really? How does it do that? I'm not familiar with anywhere that limits how much ammo you can carry. Do you live in New York and that is part of the so called "Safe Act"? Inquiring minds want to know.

Not AMMO limits...firearm limits(type).

...but I don't live in Colorado! :) And I said Aurora "type" situations - not specifically Colorado.

ALL THE TIME Rastoff, all the time! Our wives KNOW that whenever we get together, the subject is going to turn to weapons/tactics and martial arts (he and I both hold black belts). ;)

My point was that when you peruse the internet gun forums, there are an amazing number of folks who seemingly feel the need to lug around more armament and ammunition during the course of their regular daily activities than the cops who patrol the same areas.

That, and the interesting statistic that reportedly no more than 20% of actively employed cops even carry a weapon when off-duty. Imagine how that number may drop upon retirement and return to the ranks of the private person.

All my speed loaders fit in one nice shirt pocket. My 38 spl S&W 642 don't weigh much and neither does my CA 44 spl Bulldog. Two places to draw from, depending on the need.
Why would someone want a semi automatic with 15 rounds
when a revolver holds 5 to 8 rounds? Just by making the switch to a revolver the will not have to carry any extra rounds
since five is usually enough. But I keep thinking back to them
FBI statistics about three people attacking like in a parking lot.
So all the folks carrying a semi automatic with 15 rounds and
a spare magazine are per revolver standards loaded down.
Guess that would be good if they meet up with a grizzly bear.
No wonder New York set a limit on the magazine size. Are
the guys carrying them semi automatics extremists?

YMMV.

I have had literally hundreds of days at the range...thousands of handgun rounds fired. NEVER a non-intentional malfunction/misfire. :) (One time a sight dot backed out.)

Never ever carried more than one handgun; never considered the possibility of needing one given my training and experiences.

30.5 years as a crimefighter; never shot anybody but "used" a gun more times than I can recall.

Now carry a M60 or M642...sometimes a speedstrip in my pocket...usually not. Speedloader in both vehicles. (Yes, I know.)

Be safe.
