I bought a 49 Bodyguard and then a 649-2 back in the 90's while working at a gun store while in college. I noticed the actions/controls seem to "snick more" for a lack of a better term than the new ones. Like there is more going on inside. When you cock them you hear a pleasing mechanical sounding ka-chink instead of a ka-thunk. They all shoot fine. Has anyone else noticed this or is it in my head?

I played with one of the brand new Mod 66's. The action was nothing to write home about. I agree the actions on the newer S&W wheelguns is not as nice. The lock may contribute a bit to that, but I think the big issue is the lack of TLC the current production guns get. Back in the day, there was a lot more hand fitting & finishing. My old Mod 67 from the. '70's has a real nice action. It's unaltered too.

Yes, I noticed that too. They are definitely 'different'.

But, I guess it depends on who you are and which you prefer.
