I just picked up this pre-model 10 today. The seller said he called S&W and was told the serial number dates to 1914. From what I've read on this forum that would make this a 3rd change I believe. There is no rust or pitting but much of the finish is gone. The gun is tight and locks up solid on each chamber. I paid $225 for the gun and two speed loaders.

Is it .38 Special or .32-20?

Assuming the grips are correct it would be from 1911-1919. If you provide a SN it can be dated more closely. FYI, it was made long before what a collector would call a pre-Model 10. That pre-Model 10 designation started in 1948.

I believe I can read .38 Special on the left barrel. It's from those years (early teens? I'm not sure for how long that went; mine is from 1913) when the patent dates were stamped on the right side of the barrel.

It is .38 special. The serial number is 2279xx. All serial numbers match, including the grip.

That's a beauty!

You may have already figured this, so at the risk of being obvious- mild ammo for that old work horse, it was made before S&W started heat treating the cylinders.

Absolutely, I roll my own and will find a mild load that it likes. I don't own any "safe queens" so this will get used.

I'd buy those at $225 all day long. That's a real keeper. Lack of finish has never troubled me much, as long as things aren't rusting away. Speaking of which, you might want to have a look under the sideplate-- those oldies often need a little internal care; there's usually some ancient sludge in there that used to be lubricant, or even a little rust to attend to.
