I'm a hostage negotiator (they call us "crisis negotiators" now). Sometimes the best negotiation tactic is a bullet to the head.

this IS exactly what this country needs. 18 of the 50 states have abolished the death penalty...........36%. why are people like speck, gacy, dahmer, manson kept alive, warm ,fed and healthy on the tax payer's dollar?????

there are way too many prisons and too few hard road chain gangs.

Sorry that the little girl had to experience this, but it could have ended much worse. Good job to the Captain!

Well done. The captain saved the tax payers there a good ten million! Thank God for a few good men that do their job.

Pretty scary stuff for mom and little girl. Had this turned out with the little girl set free by this freak, and the freak then captured: He could of looked forward to free room and board and analysis for a couple years. Then he'd be released upon us again to bend his mind with drugs and wine until he recreated this scenario, maybe with a tragic result. For once a happy result. They should send the freaks family a bill for the bullet that killed him and cleaning up the blood.

Sounds like the knife wielding thug not only got what he deserved but what he wanted, suicide by cop. Prayers for the mother, child and policeman.

Len

Glad the captain was a decisive man. I have two daughters, too, both pretty well grown now, but when they were young I'd never have taken them into a Wal-Mart!

Bad news all the way around, but captain Huff did what needed to be done. I thank him for doing his job.

The guy definitely wanted to die and didn't want to do the job himself. No other outcome was possible under those circumstances and he knew it.

Amen to that.

He played the drama to the end, claiming that keeping him on death row for 30 years was cruel and unusual punishment!

The Supreme Court ruled the very hour set for his execution that it could proceed. Thank God AG Baker finally put this animal down.
All four of the perps should have been swinging in the wind within months of the deeds.

Believe me, the brief outlines in those links don't begin to give the horrible details of the deeds they did. Research it ONLY if you want to turn your stomach. They couldn't have souls.

Let's all say a prayer for the child & her mom as well as the officer who had to do what those of us in law enforcement dread thinking about having to do. From personal experience, I can assure you that ,even though it was undoubtably the right thing, it is not an experience that you just forget about.

Thank you, that needed saying by someone who has been in that terrible situation.

Please excuse an ignorant musing from someone with no knowledge of wise LE tactics; but shouldn't someone who seizes a child and threatens him/her with a knife be shot immediately(since he could harm the child at any second)?

Gacy and Dahmer are already dead, don't know about Speck. Manson is still alive.

While I applaud this police officer, and agree with all these comments, just remember we still haven't heard the fat lady sing.

I give it 2 weeks and we're gonna read about how this poor misguided man was forced by the establishment to take this action and momma/wife lost the love of her life and there will be a multi-zillion dollar wrongful death lawsuit, cuz he was such a wonderful, gentle man who was murdered by the man and wasn't give a proper chance to surrender and he wasn't really gonna hurt that baby and he was crying out for help and Bull corn statement after bull corn statement.

I'm so sick of this ****.

Yep! It's coming

Speck is dead too.
My dad went to school with the father of one of the young women that Speck killed.
Her dad would come by every year with a petition to get Speck released.

The first time he came by my dad was MAD - *How could you want that animal out??*

*They won't let me in....*

Hope the tot remembers nothing of this and has no hearing loss. Cheers to the officer for turning off the lights of another banger...way to go!

I think the officer did a great job. He tried to end the confrontation with nobody getting hurt, and when he felt he had to make a move he did it swiftly and effectively.

Pulling his gun right away would be a mistake. The kidnapper would just hold the girl in front of him and probably start leaving the area.

.

Anyone evil enough to harm a child deserves exactly what this man got. I never have figured out why the anti capital punishment gang cannot understand that a death sentence is the only absolute guarantee people like this will not become repeat offenders.

Amen to that.

Hard to believe it has been forty years since the Alday Murders. I remember following the story as it happened. They captured them in West Va., didn't they? One of the murderers is still living in prison, or was a month or so back. One was released after 20 years and died in 2009. It really was a horrific story. I talked to a family member once at the Atlanta Farmers Market. We were both there with watermelons.
