If I want to leave MI in mid-February for obvious reasons and spend 3-4 days soaking up the sun in Key West FL, where do you recommend I stay? Would also like to kayak, snorkel a little, and maybe a fishing trip. Help me plan my winter getaway!

We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria last year and had a great stay. They have a small beach area and they offer excursions that you are looking for that leave from the hotel. It is also in walking distance to downtown.

I can help!

This question is right in my wheelhouse. :D

Stay at the La Concha (Crowne Plaza property) on Duval Street. Duval is the main drag in Key West. You DO want to stay downtown...trust me. :)

Hotel is within walking distance of everything. I do mean everything...except the airport. ;) You do NOT want to have a car...zero need...unless you want to leave town. Rent a scoot if you like and don't want to walk, but it is very walkable. Great food and bars. Please don't patronize a chain bar/restaurant whilst there. Soooooo many other places to enjoy. Do visit Jack Flat's (about a two minute walk from La Concha) and get a grouper sandwich. I don't even like fish and love these.

Hang out with the locals; they are very welcoming.

You do not want to 'dress up' whatsoever. I wore a tie for dinner on my first visit and almost had to fight my way out of the hotel. They made me take it off. I am serious. :D

In case you're wondering, I have never taken a gun to Key West. Have never seen a hint of violence...but you will see lotsa weird people.

Will follow up with more info a bit later...

Bon voyage!

Be safe.

I recommend The Southermost Hotel on the very end of Duval street. This way, the entirety of what you want to see and visit unfolds in a straight line before you, culminating with the docks and sundown street performances at the very end. See if Capt. Ted Baer is still doing charters. Nice boat and he'll put you on fish.

I second that. Wife and I stayed at the Pier House a couple years back and it was wonderful. The address is 1 Duval St., any further and you're wet. Be advised public drunkenness is both a team and individual sport, watch your footing. Joe

Rates for the place are 'reasonable' too, has a nice pool and a wonderful pool-side tiki Bar that almost makes it hard to leave..
We loved the hospitality of the bartender and the staff here at large.

The only thing I can add is try to leave the spouse at home ;)

We were just there in May 2018. We stayed at Key West Harbor Inn Key West Resort | Bed and Breakfast | Guesthouse | Old Town | Duval St
They are located just a block away from the beginning of Duval street. They have pool area and a nightly manager reception at 5PM.
You do not need a car once you arrive.
Take a morning sunrise ( if you are an early riser) or an evening sunset cruise on a sail boat called the Jolly Rover ( Key West Sailing Adventure and Sunset Sails - Schooner Jolly Rover )
There are a few big chain places, but there is a better vibe at the smaller, local places for food and beverages.
Many of the local bars have nightly live music. A place called Tattoos and Scars became our late night hangout spot.
I wanted to drive 7 mile bridge, so we flew into Fort Lauderdale and drove to Key West.

I've stayed at the Banana Bay Resort. It's a scooter ride to Duval Street, but we went down to chill out and relax. It's a no kids resort, and the view around the pool may or may not be most great.

When I was in high school, I lived in Key West. It is always fun to read the post about Key West. Lots of crazy people there. There are also many nice people living there. I guess that it is that way most places.

Key West/ Duval St. reminds me of Bourbon Street only it is less trashier, a LOT safer and a WHOLE LOT cleaner. The people are very accommodating as their life blood is tourism. Some of the places have 3-8p.m. happy hours. Check out the harbor. Walking and biking are THE way to go.We drove-parked the car and didn't use it until we leftl GO off of Duval St. as there are a lot of really nice restaurants, gift shops etc. GO to Neptune Jewelers to get your ear pierced and buy one of those neat gold shackle earrings! Tell them that the crazy drunk lawyer from Louisiana sent you. If you're lucky the girl with the big bazoombas is still working there. If you're not drunk enough there is a package liquor store across the street where you can buy a couple of Red Stripes to get up the courage. When the girl pierced my ear I apologized for being drunk and her response was "don't worry-so am I "
As you can tell, I enjoyed my visit :D

We lived on Big Pine Key for about 10 years, the keys is a great place to be a biker. Fishing? I did both sport, and back country, MUCH preferred the back country in a small boat. Get off Key West, while it is a fun place there is so much more there. Not sure how much is left of Big Pine though. If it is still up, and running take a trip to No Name Key and get a pizza at the No Name Pub just past my old house.

The Pier house is good and the Ocean key resort is right across the street, they are both located on Duval st. Lots of places to explore and eat. Lots of bars. they got a good place that makes fudge and ice cream on Duval st. Definitely do a kayak trip good way to see the island i'm sure they have kayak tours . The conch train is a open tour to show you the sites they drive around the island. Fishing is good depends on what kind you would like to do backcountry or offshore sailfishing is red hot right now. Water temp just dropped down to 80 degrees thats still good for diving or snorkeling just pick the right day [calm seas]don't forget the sunset at Mallory Square good drinks and some street performers always fun to watch the sunset in Key West

GIf you start at The Start (#1 Duval), and become leg-weary by the end, you can always hail A RICkSHAW for the return trip or remainder of it! Hahaha. But i'm Not really kidding. It's awesome. And inexpensive. Used this option any number of times over three visits there. Book at the Southernmost. You can't get lost, it's a straight line.

Annnd, seeing as this is Smith & Wesson forum, I highly recommend making a stop at one of the older, local, live-music etc. venues, named Durty Harry's. Maybe not 'family fare'. But if it's you and a date, and you like Rock n Roll, this is definitely a place you want to stop in. It's a destination for me anytime I visit. Can't imagine going to KW without catching some show there.

It's on the left? Heading North? I think??? Lol. Maybe halfway up Duval.
