One of my favorite S&W models. I just adopted another 28-2 with 6" bbl. This one is in 98% plus condition. Just strolling through the gun show in Fayetteville, NC and there it was. Few and far between of these found at shows near me in this condition or at all for that matter.

Very nice find, beautiful gun! My contribution has the shorter barrel.

NYSP 28-2

I just acquired this 4" Model 28-2 marked NYSP. It has a wide smooth trigger, a red ramp front sight and white outline rear sight blade.

That's very nice, no turn line, nice finish and stocks. Do you know the approx date of the gun? looks to be between 1974-1982.I've found the gun shows in my part of NC (northwest of Charlotte) to be a pretty good place to find nice revolvers. I've bought four S&W's in the last couple of years that were fabulous condition. There is a pawn shop in Mooresville, and the owner always has a table at our local show. I've bought 5 revolvers from him, three of them at the gun show; I bought my M28-2 from him. Do you know where Mid-South Guns is? That's a store more near you, between Fayetteville and Laurinburg, in a little crossroads called Wagram, on US401. He usually has a great selection of classic firearms of all kinds, and I've found a couple there, too. I even drove all the way to Southport a year ago to buy my M58 from a guy there.

Looking good folks, keep em' comin. Just cant beat an N frame smith. The diamond magnas are timeless in my opinion. I am on the hunt for a model 27 also. Just haven't had the opportunity to adopt one yet.

From the research I have done in SCSW it appears my gun was manufactured/shipped in 1977-78. It is pinned and recessed. The grips on it are period correct, but not original to the gun itself. It had a nice pair of reproduction target grips with S&W medallions, however it looks much more true to form with the service magnas on it. I was astonished at the condition of the bluing and overall maintenance. It must have been a long term safe queen. Shows some evidence of being fired, but very little.

I'll play along...

Although there are several other significant Highway Patrolman threads on the Forum, I'll jump in on this one. Here are my three Highway Patrolmen...all are 28-2s ca. 1974-1977. The bottom HP is the first S&W I bought and it started my S&W revolver addiction! Unfortunately, a previous owner had drilled some porting holes in the barrel and it was wearing some horrible stocks. I put on the Jim Badger stocks that it wears now. At the time I bought it, the price was right and it's a great shooter.

other than two Black Powder replica's I bought in the early '70's, I only have one revolver, a 28-2. This past summer I dropped by the Cabela's just south of Charlotte, and wandered, as I usually do, thru the Gun Library. I have bought several other firearems there in the past few years. Saw this really nice 4 inch S&W, looked unused and unworn to me, so bought it, for $600 or so. I reload 38 sp for it, and enjoy shooting it a lot, & letting others have a go at it. I got a holster from El Paso, and found some snake loads, so it will be my firearm when I go Indian point and pottery hunting in the local creeks.

It really is a nice pistol, and fits my big hands and long fingers just fine. I recently got some new 357 cases, and plated 158 grains, and will set about making some of those up for it.

Shooting 1911 and other pistols for over a half century, shooting a big revolver is ver different.

I tend to be pretty lucky over the years with my impulse shopping finds.

My choice for a working gun.
Smooth PC magnas.

This is the one I grab for the woods.
It has a white ramp front sight and WO rear one.
I bring the dog a lot and the sights would work well if a bear or coyote was not behaving.
Quick accurate sight picture and a cover shirt conceals it perfectly.
