Let's see those Highway Patrolmen

Picked up this S serialed 4" 28-2 from a forum member here so I could stop shooting my 27-2. Then I started feeling bad about shooting this nice 28, so I picked up a 4" 686-3, and then found a nice 2 1/2" 686-3. They are my regular shooters. Yes, the affliction is real!!

This is a 28-2 with a very early N serial number. Got it from an estate collection and hasn't been fired outside the factory. That needs to change!

Down to just 1 'Smith..HWP 28-2 6'', N294XXX.
Barrel turning purple...had cone cleaned up by local custom shop,. started ''spitting'' hot lead........now back to its old accurate self.......
will find some nice wood grips this fall/winter down in ARIZONA.......
up here in western Kanada, we love our pistols too !!

I started off my LEO career back in the 70's with a 6" Highway Patrolman. I later switched to a 4" version as it was easier to carry. When we made the transition to Semi-autos, I sold off the 6" and gave the 4" to my dad (Which he still has).

I had the 4" worked over by F. Bob Chow before I gave it to my dad:

This is my current 6" that I picked up at my LGS a few years back:

I was a deputy in Laramie County, Wyoming in 1983. We had a new sheriff who required us to get 357 revolvers. I had a FFL at the time and ordered about 20 of the NYSP Model 28s from John Jovino in NYC. I wish I had kept mine.

I recently was able to find another NYSP Model 28. It took nearly 38 years to find, but it is now mine.

Here is my 6" Shooter grade. I also have a 4" but can't locate any photos at the moment other than it being in a Bianchi Cyclone Holster.

At the time I acquired this one, I owned (and still do) four other 28s, of which two were primary guns for both my dad and me in the middle 1960s.

However, this one caught my eye because it was apparently unfired, and the original box verfied that these beautiful target stocks were on it when it was shipped. It still remains pristine, and is one of my favorite safe queens.

It is strange. I see lots of nice photos of Highway Patrolman revolvers. The OP asked for pictures of "Highway Patrolmen." I only see one of those, thanks to luvsmiths. :D

Yours is in beautiful, maybe better called pristine, condition. I found my 6" Model 28-2 about 10 years ago and it is a terrific shooter. The stocks are a bit rough. I still haven't made up my mind about refinishing them.

had a six inch 28 that I purchased brand new for $150 along with a four inch 19 for $179 in the late 70's. I needed money about five years later and sold them, for a good price at the time. Later on I tried to purchase both types again and it took me a while to find a 19 that was good enough for the money. Got the 66 as a bonus from the dealer at the time. I also stumbled into a four inch 28 at another local gun store for a reasonable price. But I haven't found a six inch 28 yet I liked well enough to fork over the money for it. Always good to see one is nice shape :-)

Hooray I can play!

I just got this from an estate sale. Previous owner had some trigger work done and it was sent back to be nickeled at the factory - saw a screen shot of the letter but still waiting on the paperwork. Wish they would have left the hammer and trigger alone.

Model 28

I only have one - a 4 inch no dash 4 screw TH/TT currently sporting Ahrends but I have the original grips. Another 4 inch with "made to measure"Herretts Grips was my first duty revolver when we supplied our own.
The 6" belongs to my elderly shooting buddy and I hope to become its caretaker someday. In the early 80s I took it to the factory and had a trigger job done for him (back in the "while you wait" days for cops at the service center).

My M28-2 & Recently Adopted Box

This 28-2 is an S pre-fix and is wearing a little newer set of presentation grips. It is sitting in a newly acquired S pre-fix 28-2 S&W box with papers and even an un-opened set of tools.

I've come to realize that the "Highway Patrolman" was and still is possibly the best Smith & Wesson revolver for the money.
