Concerning the Brazil 37 s/n 167406 that I referred to in an earlier post on 11/26/07. I received my factory letter from Roy Jinks. In it he stated that it was "shipped from our factory on May 15, 1946, and delivered to John Block Co., New York City, NY, freight forwarding company for the Brazilian Government. The records indicate that this firearm was shipped with a 5.5 inch barrel, blue finish, butt swivel. and checkered walnut grips."

I went back and looked up your earlier post with pics. Is that gun a round top frame with the very SMALL, rounded rear sight notch? That is what it appears to be in the pics.
The "checkered walnut grips" I find very interesting. I still think the 1946 shipped guns were in exact WW I configuration, with smooth grips. I say that because the 37-38 guns were, in my best guess, always the commercial type with flat top frames, square notch, high polish, and checkered medallion grips. I know a LOT of them came back with smooth grips, and are usually the WW I type.
Granted, the importer, and possibly the Brazilians, mis-matched most of the grips, but they generally seem to appear with smooth grips on round tops, and checkered grips on flat top commercial types, so I wonder if that is a typo in the letter. 99% of the letters Roy sends end with "checkered walnut grips".

Duuuuuhhhhhhhhh- I just looked at the serial number, and realize it has to be a round top.

tsk...

Sounds like a nice one!

I have a South African .38 S&W British Service Revolver that shipped from the S&W Factory on May 3, 1940. It too, was shipped to John Block & Company, freight forwarder in NYC, NY.

Thank you digi-shots. I also have a U.S. Navy Victory shipped out in October 1942 according to the letter. Handejector, the grips on my 1937 are smooth walnut but are not original. It may have shipped with checkered in 1946 as they were putting whatever was available together to complete the Brazil contract. I would like to get some checkered grips for it as I intend to shoot this old war horse!

tsk... nice looking pic!

By the way, did you NAVY Victory happen to ship on Oct. 21, 1942? I've got one that shipped on that date with s/n V125,311. Just wondered how close the serial numbers are.

Digi-shots-
My Navy Victory s/n V121894 shipped a couple of weeks earlier than yours, on Oct. 6, 1942. That means that they must have been churning them out at roughly 6,000 per month. [IMGhttp://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd100/tskunlimited/na

It would be great to see pictures of your Brazilians and Victory's. Photobucket.com is the site I use to post pictures on this site. Give them a try.
