I love them, and have many of them:)
Some of my favorites are my 4" .38 Special GP100's and my NYPD .38 Service Six DAO. Also have a GPNY and several security trade in .38 Service Sixes. My nightstand gun right now is a 4" blue half lug .38 GP100 loaded with Golden Saber .38 +P. One of my main EDC carry pieces is a .38 SP101.

The .38 GP's are neat, kind of a modern Ruger version of a 38/44 HD or Outdoorsman.

I love massively overbuilt Ruger revolvers, so naturally I have a .357 Redhawk too:)

Picked up a blue fixed sight half lug .38 GP-100 about a year ago for $275 from a small LGS in Manassas, VA. Great shooter and will work up some 38-44 equivalent hand loads for it someday.

A local shop has several of the .38 SP101s in stock. I always wondered, what is the advantage these have as opposed to just getting one in .357 and having a choice of loads? Is the .38 version lighter or more compact?

No, not lighter or more compact ( actually a teeny bit heavier since there is a miniscule more metal in the cylinder due to being reamed shorter)

The .357 is admittedly more versatile; however many do not shoot .357's in theirs or only do it only once due to the blast and recoil in a small light gun. .38 makes sense for some; it will take any .38 spl load, and is theoretically more accurate with spl's sense there is less cylinder jump. Also; there are still some agencies or areas where the magnum is not allowed. This is especially true of the Ruger Security / Speed Six where the company was making the .38 spl version for police and Government sales.

Policerevolvercollector I used to own that CCH marked .38 Service Six:)
Do you own that one or just using the pic?

I bought 5 of them in a "lot", I used to carry that one quite a bit. The red paint on the front sight was added by me. The remaining 4 are also stamped CCH, and these all seem to have been carried a lot more than fired.

I kept 4 of them because I keep them in a 4 gun handgun rack in my safe, I traded that one to Free State Arms toward a Manurhin revolver. Figured I didn't need 5 of them lol

Ya'll got me beat , I only have a pair of former Security Co blue Service Sixes. Very ugly , very smooth.

The origional SP101's were .38spl , with corresponding length cylnders. [ Insert interesting story about creation of .357 SP101 that I received first hand from two of the involved individuals ]

The very first .357's used .38 length cylnders , and were marked 125gr and lighter only. Within about a year, the cylnder was streatched to handle SAAMI length .357 rounds. After the remaining stock of .38 length cylnders were used up , all SP101's were made with same (longer) cylnder , with the .38 only guns simply having shorter chambers.
