Looking at Model 2213 at LGS

I am considering buying a Model 2213 that a LGS has just listed for sale. After researching this forum and other web resources this model 22lr seems to be fairly hard to find and somewhat pricey. This one is S/N UBA0xxx, with 2 8 round magazines, the factory range bag and holster and the original box. The box label matches the gun and even has the original price tag of $249.96. The photos I have looked at show some rust stains by the rear sight and rust stains on the inside of the range bag like the gun has been stored away for a long time and not used. It is not NIB for sure but it isn't that bad, maybe just needs a good cleaning. Obviously I will go look at it closely before deciding to buy or not.
My question is this.....the LGS has it priced at $500, although he is always willing to negotiate and I think he would probably come down closer to $400. Is that a reasonable price for this 2213? I can't find any info on the web on recent sale prices so any opinions you guys may have on its value would be very much appreciated.

Chief, you'd do well to pick up a 2213 in the $400 range in the condition it's in. Your LGS is a bit optimistic at five bills, but they might have been looking at GunBroker asking prices and figuring they could start high and go down. These guns have a good reputation for eating most anything, unlike their predecessor Model 61 pistols, and they're fun little guns. Hope you can come to an agreement with your guy.

The LGS has a Ruger Single Ten that I was seriously considering until I found the 2213 on his website today. I really like the Ruger but I am thinking the 2213 may be a good investment. From what I've seen one of the 8 round mags is worth $100-125 itself!!

Chief, I think I see the "rare" and "pricey" comparable package to what your LGS has, and I'm kinda taken aback by how expensive it is. The promotional package just doesn't seem to justify so much money. The one I see is in what looks like really good condition without any stains, but whether it's worth over six bills is anyone's guess.

The thing about this gun and its brother 2214 is that the little mags are getting hard to find at a reasonable price. You get two with the one you are buying, so that might be enough, but just be aware these only fit these two guns.

I know the 8 round mags are very scarce and $$$$$. It is my understanding the the 10 rounders for the model 41 and 422 will fit, the just stick out of the grip 1/2 inch. I just saw a few on ebay at half the price of 8's

I would get it sir – heck, even the cleaning rod, if it’s in that box, is worth 50 bucks. I managed to find a 2214 in 2018 and like it a lot.

I too think that's pretty pricey.

I have a 2214 I bought about 10 years on a whim when no one seemed.too interested in them. No extras, just the pistol. It seemed like the LGS just wanted to get rid if it, as I bought it for $170 out the door. S&W was still still selling the magazines on their website for $28, so I bought 2.

They are neat little pistols, but even $400 seems too much. But, since it has all the goodies, maybe that's what they're going for these days. Good luck!

Buy it. That package is extremely hard to find, and a deal in the $400-$500 range. My good friend owns one and it never ceases to put a smile on our faces when he takes it to the range. Flawless functioning and a pretty decent trigger pull. An easy carry piece in a holster or pocket. Great for the trails or what have you.

Just a couple more observations after looking at some closed sales on Gunbroker:

Looks like there might have been a promotional package offered for these guns in the UAB serial number that included the box, a blue S&w range bag, pistol with two magazines, and what look's like a nylon "Uncle Mike's" style holster. One of these went for over $650 each recently after being advertised as 1 of 1500 of the promotional packages. (By the way, there were many more 2213s than that, although I've never seen an actual number. They aren't rare, and were produced from 1991 to 1999.) Another one of these, which was missing the box, had the holster and range bag, and had a TVL serial number, sold for $620, and a third, which was missing the box and holster, was $450. Curiously, what you have is very similar to the one with the box, but your box doesn't have the word *PROMO* under the Features section on the right-hand side of the label, and it also has a different Spec. Ord. number. Yours also is a low 200's UAB serial number, while the other is in the 2200 range, so if the 1,500 units figure is correct, perhaps yours wasn't one of the promotional packages. It could even conceivably be a normal boxed 2213 with mags, and someone bought a range bag and a holster to go with it.

None of this changes the fact that what your LGS has is a neat little package that, if you can get for less than $500, is a good buy and will be a pistol I think you'll enjoy shooting.

I would like to throw in to the discussion that we often toss around terms such as “rare” and “scarce” and “hard to find” but these terms are very loosely defined and I would suggest that they are relative.

To get a feel for how easy or difficult it is to find and buy a high condition 2213, I’ll suggest that you pick a few different models that are relative to the discussion when you try to really get an idea of the scarcity of the subject gun.

So we could start with Smith & Wesson .22cal semiauto pistols and obviously the 422/622 have to be in the discussion. Compared to them, indeed the 2213/2214 is more scarce, made for fewer years, must be less produced.

For some guns that we discuss, Roy Jinks has released actual production numbers, amount of actual units shipped. He didn’t do that for these. I suspect that if he had, and we could compare it to some other regular production models (not scarce, hand built Performance Center guns) we would re-assess any opinion that claims they aren’t scarce.

A Model 41 or a 22A, not scarce. A 422/622, harder to find than either a 41 or 22A, but not at all rare. A 2213/2214, certainly harder to find than a 422/622 for sure.

My 2213, purchased in 1994 with serial number UAF 89XX, is marked “promo” on the box under features. It came with the carry pouch and holster which Velcro’s inside of the pouch. Date code is 4151.

I picked one of these up a few years ago. A guy was walking the floor at a local gun show tying to sell it. He wanted $400 for it. I was surprised he made it half way through the show and still had it.

This is the whole package for the 2213 I am looking at. If I am correct the Spec Ord code on the box indicates Aug 29 1994. No indication of Promo on the label. The package does include the carry pouch and holster and 2 mags. Pistol is also engraved Houlton, Maine instead of Springfield, Mass

I would get it especially if it's in good or better condition. They haven't made them for quite a while and nice ones are a premium right now. I added a suppressor to mine just for kicks and it's a fun pistol to shoot. Just don't expect quarter sized groups with it at 25 yards!!
